Favorite Things About USC

What is the talk from all UCLA kids that USC is located in the ghetto?
It's hard not to have your perceptions painted funny when you're spoiled and in Westwood.

My favorite things about my cross-town rival? Easy:

Ron Howard, Bryan Singer, Robert Zemeckis, John Carpenter, Richard Kelly, John Singleton, and to a lesser extent George Lucas.

Dude, we ARE ghetto. And pac10baby...I kinda hate your guts.

Oh c'mon...USC is SO NOT ghetto. I can think of schools in much more ghetto areas. Cough Cal Cough.

margaritasalt17 -- hey now, where's the love? why are you hatin' on my mad skills? what don't you like - my fine GPA in a difficult major, or the fact that I can party with the best of them AND still bring home the A's?

if only USC offered AP Life, then you could bump yourself over the 4.0 mark.

USC's got some nice Booty. woohoo go trojans!!!

Fight On, Baby!!!!

I hope USC is more diverse in student body than UCLA..
You got it.

"Residing in the heart of a global city, USC has established one of the most diverse institutions in the world, with students from all 50 states as well as over 115 countries. ... The student body encompasses 6,846 international students, more than any other university in the United States." Wikipedia

UCLA diversity means all asians. USC actually has student body variations.

Whoa, 115 countries? I did NOT know that.

(pac10baby: i'm just really really jealous is all)

Ethnicity
African American 6%
Latino / Hispanic 13%
Native American / Pacific Islander 2%
Asian 21%
Caucasian 47%
International (student visa holders) 9%
Not indicated 2%

http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/parents/images/profilefreshman2006.pdf

are you certain that it's 47% white? i thought it was closer to 40%. well it FEELS more diverse at least because of the surrounding area.

Some more reasons-although 24 hr TroGro and the milkshakes at Ground Zero are pretty awesome-

-There are so many opportunities for community service; there's no excuse not to help out, even if it's tutoring a local elementary school student for a few hours on the weekend.
-Maybe I was just lucky with the classes that I took, but I really enjoyed the multidisciplinary aspect of the TO courses and how you could explore several different fields and see how they all connected. The so-called 'big lectures' were much less intimidating than I had expected, but maybe that was because I always sit up front. That, and big lectures often have really good professors that everyone wants to have.
-Our TV station is the best in the country, even if it does seem that most people on campus don't seem to watch it. Seriously, you don't have to be a cinema major to work at Trojan Vision. I write for the game show Mind Games, which is rather fun, and crew on Birnkrant 616 which is absolutely hilarious. We're in the middle of filming the second season right now, so please tune in during the spring when it airs!

Also, this is going to sound really strange, but I was surprised that I saw way more homeless people around Harvard Square in two months than at USC, where I've never seen any. And yes, I do venture off-campus sometimes.

^ man, once the week hits Thursday night, i'm off campus all the time! haha. it isn't that shady if you have a good group of people going. and often times i'll be on the Metro going to Hollywood and sorts...

there are several things i love...the people here are mostly well-rounded...not only are they smart, but fun, diverse, and extremely interesting. another thing is the "work hard, play hard" mentality. i'm in Electrical Engineering and for my first semester (which included EE105 and Calc II with a ridiculous professor), i got a 4.0 :D. but i couldn't count how many weeknights i played squash, how many weekends i went out and partied hard, or how many concerts i went to, all the way from Hollywood to San Pedro. and i know this is the case for a lot (not most, but many) people. it's been such a fulfilling experience so far, academically, socially, and all things in between. i had doubts about USC during the summer before, but i couldn't imagine myself anywhere else anymore.

i will say though, that 4 months of this is a bit tiring...doing all this isn't very conducive to sleep! but i'll easily sacrifice sleep for the amazing waking moments.
