FDA approves GSK Arexvy vaccine against RSV for age 60+

FDA approves GSK Arexvy vaccine against RSV for age 60+.

Such great news. I hope that babies, not just pregnant women, can get vaccinated eventually. In 1995, our son fell very ill with RSV when he was nine weeks old. He was hospitalized for more than five days. It was so scary. I had never heard of RSV before then. That was the same week my husband was diagnosed with shingles (probably triggered by the stress of losing his job four days before our son was born) and we also had a two-year-old to care for. I don’t know how we got through that week.

Yes here too. Younger S was hospitalized at 11 days old. He never had any solid symptoms. I just felt like something was wrong even though everyone told me he was fine. He just seemed to get sleepier as the days went by. “all babies are sleepy the first couple of weeks.” He would projectile vomit about once a day. “All babies spit up.” Once in a blue moon he’d do a little cough. I’d take his temp a million times though and it was normal.

But as soon as it hit 100.4 I called the doctor (after hours) who had me take him into an outpatient clinic associated with the ER. His O2 was 80%. They wisked him right away across the street to the hospital. Not the usual 3-6 hour wait one typically gets there. They kept him for a week. He was a good sized baby (8-9) which helped him a lot, they said. It was still terrible.

D25 was a premier so she qualified for RSV vaccines. We still had to argue with insurance some.

Do you mean your D25 qualified for other vaccines? An RSV vaccine was in the process of development in the 1960s, but all development was halted when it acted like an anti-vaccine and some young children in the study group died.

I think it was this but I’m not sure

Palivizumab looks like antibodies for short term protection rather than vaccine to stimulate one’s own antibody production and other immune response for longer term protection.

Thanks for the clarification. She did have to get it monthly during RSV season.
