February 4 New England Deep Freeze!

I just went outside with the dog. It’s up to 12 degrees and the wind has stopped blowing. It felt so much warmer than earlier.

Some stupid person in an apartment below my daughter must have not kept his heat on or his sink trickling and the pipe burst (the building is old and all the tenants were given these instructions before the cold started). They had to turn off the water to the entire building and she has no water. No fun, luckily she has someplace to go tonight (landlord will get her a hotel tomorrow night if water is not back on by then).

The summit of Mt Washington was colder than the surface of Mars!!

Good news is the cold only lasts about two days. In Denver it was below zero on Mon and Tues (I think about -10) and for the last 3 days it has hit 50+. Sunshine is heading east.

I grew up skiing in upper Michigan when there were often days of -20 or so. Instead of checking lift tickets they’d check for frostbite and tell you “you can take another run, you have to go in” etc.

When I moved to Minneapolis, I woke up on Jan 2 to the radio announcer saying “It’s 29 below and the wind chill is 59 below.” Oh how I didn’t want to go to work that day.

I frostbit my fingertips skiing years ago. I was in Canada and had borrowed gear from friends since, southerner I am, I owned nothing and had no idea what to expect. None of the gear quite fit. It was miserable but we persevered.

One girl from Germany frostbit her cheeks.

I recall one particularly cold weekend skiing at Blue Mountain (Ontario) when it was so cold that my contacts kept freezing & popping out … I had to take my mittens off to put the contacts back in, and I couldn’t believe how cold my hands got in such a short time!

Saw a news report from a NE ski resort—reporter said there were “a few dozen” brave souls skiing. On a normal February Saturday the slopes would normally be full of skiers, no doubt.

Where is the wow emoji when I need it?! Brrr…I’m chilled just thinking about how cold it must have been.

We went snowmobiling last year when it was really cold. The only time it bothered me was when I took off my gloves to look at the map. Yikes, my hands got cold.
