I got federal pell grant summer for 1400 and i just found out about this today. i don’t think i’ve ever goten this before so I’m not so sure how it works. I have to work during summer and it is something i can’t miss. My question is will i be getting refund if I’m not taking any classes this summer? I asked at the financial aid office at my school and he said that i won’t get refund, the money will just be gone. I’m still not sure about this, plz help!!
No, you will not get a refund if you are not taking classes.
What you also need to find out is your $1400 part of your 2017-2018 award year? If it is then your award will be reduced during the school year (if you have a 0 EFC, your max award is $5920). If you are using $1400 in the summer, you will only have $4520 for the fall and spring terms (2260 per term).
You usually only get summer Pell if you didn’t use all the Pell $$ for the prior year (2016-17), or if your school considered the summer part of the fall year, if you requested it.
Did your school accept your for summer and you asked to start in the fall? This is very common in Florida as many students do want to start in the summer but Bright Futures does not include summers. The schools will have low income students fill out the FAFSA for the prior year, get the Pell award for the prior year (2016-17) and award what they can for the summer (full time, part time). When the student starts in the fall, he has an entire new Pell award.
Wait…the Pell is n entitlement. The student would get the full Pell for the 2016-2017 school year…right?
But if she doesn’t start until the summer, she can only get the proportionate amount. They do not hand you $5800 just for the summer.
Maybe the OP can clarify…is summer 2017 your first college term??
Since the student has indicated that he/she hasn’t gotten this Pell for summer before, it sounds like she/he is a continuing student.
If the student is continuing & did not receive the full 16-17 Pell during fall/spring terms (that is, if the student was enrolled in fewer than 12 credits in one or both of the terms), they would be eligible to receive the balance of the annual Pell in summer term. Pell is paid based on enrollment, though, so no enrollment = no Pell … and Pell is annual, so it doesn’t carry over.
