Essay Info:

  • Personal essay talks about a deeply personal event when my mom ran away to italy during her mental illness and how it affected me (like, without notice, we didnt know where she was for many weeks, she got evicted and i had to move schools, etc), and how her recovery affected my confidence to present and teach, drove me to understand culture and human condition etc.
    - Supplemental Essay talks about my interest in nanoarchitecture/nanotechnology through materials science and its applications on medicine and architecture. I identified specific professors to work with, study abroad programs I want to do, and about diversity, sharing moroccan heritage, giving back to the community all that good stuff.

Personal Info:

Live 5 miles from John’s Hopkins
Public High School
Moroccan (White (Middle East) on common app)
B3 Level in French
Mom worked at john’s hopkins hospital for nine years (I mentioned this in supplement)
My neighbour who I have dinner with almost every weekend is an associate professor of neurosurgery (mentioned in supplement)
I’m trying to secure an internship at a doctor’s office (almost there) and i want to update the admin office of this ASAP

My 1st choice is BME and second is Materials Science Engineering. I chose BME because if i can get in i’d definitely do it, but Materials Science should be realistic for me.

That’s all! I tried to give the best run down as i could. Again, please be brutally honest.

BME is their hardest major to get into. I’m going to have to say that for that major I don’t think it’s happening.

For MSE, do you have any publications? I would not have submitted that test score because of the 710 section. Also, if you put an apostrophe in “John’s” when you wrote about the school on the application that could also be problematic, since they might assume you don’t really know their school that well. Other than that, your essay topic sounds like it might be a little sketch. It would all depend how delicately and well you discussed the topic of mental illness in your family. Since I can’t see the essay, I have no idea how well it was handled.

Also, if you are in stem and haven’t had an AP bio and AP chem, that could be an issue with them because of prereqs. I think with all the stuff I just mentioned, it could be problematic getting in with the secondary major as well. Good luck though!

I agree with what you said about biomedical. I think my chance is like 1%.

  1. For the essay topics, I spent a LOT of time on the personal essay making sure I handled it well. It was a narrative essay in which only three sentences actually mentioned anything to do with mental illness, I didn’t mention specific/revealing/sketchy details. If you want to see it I can send it or whatever lol.
  2. CRAP. I did spell it John’s Hopkins. This has been a spelling mistake I developed at a young age when my mom used to work there. Should I send the AO a message apologizing for it?

I’ve taken honors bio and chem in 10th grade (As for both) but wasn’t allowed to take AP by my counselors. So for MSE, I’m not sure pre-requisites are a problematic issue. Definitely could’ve helped though.

And no I don’t have any publications. I’m currently trying to secure internships and shadowing.

So for MSE, I do think I have an okay chance of getting into it. Probably would’ve been better for Civil Engineering because I presented and taught about architecture and engineering, but I thought I could make a better case for MSE in my essay.

My final question is would you reccomend contacting AO about changing MSE to my first major and Civil Engineering to my second?

I wouldn’t contact the AO for either reason. I’d just let it go and wouldn’t bring further attention to either the major or the apostrophe error.
