Feeling Dissapointed

Hello. My name is Youthful Student and I have a problem that I want to discuss. I will be starting 9th grade in the August school year this year, and I found out that my school doesn’t offer many AP classes. Only about 25% of my school’s population is gifted and I was wondering how being in little AP classes will affect my chances of going to Brown. My school offers 0 AP Courses because we don’ have an AP teacher, and only 1 AP class in sophomore year. However, they offer a wide variety in 11th and 12th grade. I was wondering what to do and I have some questions in mind. DO I take classes at the local community college that is adjacent to my school (we are in a partnership). Thank you for browsing!

P.S.

  • I can’t be offered transportation so I have to use the Metro Bus Line.
  • My school is in many partnerships, but is in an area where 45% of people living in that area are in poverty.
  • In regards to the transportation, my parents can’t pick me up due to the shifts they have.
-What can i do for the extracurricular and academics part? Is there any thing that CAN be done?
    -Your reviews are appreciated!

THANK YOU!

AP classes are not universally available. In the small-town school where D1 went to HS for two years there were no AP or Honors classes at all. She had no opportunity to take them until junior year, and it didn’t affect her acceptance at all. What schools want to see is the rigor of your coursework compared to what your school offers. If you take whatever Honors and AP courses you are offered (within reason – don’t take a class you don’t like/need just because it is AP) you will be fine. No need for community college in your freshman year!

Another option you can consider down the line is to self-study for an AP test if there is a subject you particularly want that your school doesn’t offer as an AP class. Keep it in mind for the future, and good luck!

A lot of schools do not offer many AP opportunities until 11th grade. I say don’t sweat it. As long as you are taking the most challenging course work that school offers then colleges such as Brown will see that and take that into consideration.

Thank you NerdMom88. That made me feel better. I asked those questions because I really want to go to an Ivy league. But because od the situation, I have to wait for my junior year until I get a wide variety of options to choose from. So if I can’t AP classes, do I have to take regular classes? By doing so, will I be taken out of gifted program? Sorry for the bombardment. Thank you for the input and the story!

Thanks livinLA for the input. So does this mean I have to wait until the 11th grade before I start doing AP? Sorry, I’m just curious! Thanks again for commenting!
