Few Questions... Any help would be great!

I have been looking around on here for awhile, and finally joined and I have a question or two. I have been practicing with my teacher for awhile, but I am having trouble thinking of songs... I always try to find stuff that sounds like me, and their is one particular actor's voice who is a lot like mine... Michael Arden's voice is very simalar to mine, so when I find songs he sings, I can do them well..... So my question is this... Bare is a musical he was in, but it is off-Broadway... Are those like totally out of the question for auditions? I figure they are since the auditions say anying from standard Broadway... And my other question is, does anyone know any other songs he has done that I would be able to do for auditions? Otherwise, I guess I just need to keep looking! Thanks for any help!

I may be wrong, but I believe that the song repertoire should be from the musical theater genre but that doesn't mean the musical had to have been ON Broadway. For instance, Bat Boy, The Fantastiks, I Love You You're Perfect Now Change, The Last Five Years, Songs for a New World, Tick Tick Boom, and A New Brain were off Broadway and I'm pretty sure a student could sing a song from those musicals at a MT theater audition. In fact, I know kids who have sung from some of those musicals at BFA auditions. The point is to stick with the MT genre, not so much where the musical was performed. So, I think a song from Bare should be fine.

If it makes you feel more assured, my D's pre-1960 song was written by a very well known musical theater composer/lyricist. However, the song was technically written for a movie though most of his material was for Broadway shows. The song happened to be a song she had performed at age nine in a licensed published musical revue of this composer's songs. So, she had sung it in a published musical revue, but in researching the song, this one was written for a particular movie long ago. The composer is considered a MT composer. She got into several BFA programs, using this song.

I don't know Michael Arden's repertoire, so sorry to not help on that part.

I am glad you finally JOINED in here though!

you're absolutely fine to use off-bway stuff. a lot of times, people interchange "broadway" and "musical theatre", though they're really not the same thing.

as long as it fits the contraints for audition (cut, genre, time period, etc.) you're fine.

best of luck!! i hope you find some great new stuff!

That is the answer I wanted to here! Thanks so much! The audition is Nov. 17th, so I am getting ready and that just would have been a pain if off-broadway was a problem... Thanks both for the help!
