Fictional Characters and their colleges.

All colleges showcase their notable Alumni, not many display the fictional characters associated with them! This is pretty much just for fun, but sometimes, fictional characters can give a pretty good idea about the reputation of the college.

Let me Start,

Tony Stark - MIT (Ironman)
Dr. Gregory House - Johns Hopkins University (House M.D.)
Howard Wolowitz - MIT (The Big Bang Theory)

Add to the list!

Stephen Colbert (the character) - Dartmouth

Most of the cast of the movie, “The Big Chill” attended Michigan:

Included are business owner Harold (Kevin Kline)and his physician wife Sarah (Glenn Close); Michael (Jeff Goldblum), a journalist; Sam (Tom Berenger), a TV star; Karen (JoBeth Williams), married to an executive; Nick (William Hurt), a drug-addicted Vietnam vet; and Meg (Mary Kay Place) a lawyer. There was also a brief appearance of Kevin Costner as a corpse. Quite a variety!

Most of the cast of How I Met Your Mother went to Wesleyan. On the West Wing, President Bartlet went to Notre Dame, his daughter goes to Georgetown, and Sam went to Princeton and Duke.

Here’s a literary map of University of Chicago people in fiction:
http://magazine.uchicago.edu/9504/UChicagoMag_9504-1995-Apr_Writers-Blocks.jpg</a></p>

Fictional alumni/faculty missing from the map:

Indiana Jones (and his mentor, Abner Ravenwood)

Dr. Richard Kimble (of the Fugitive, in which many scenes take place in and around the university’s medical facilities. See: [THE FUGITIVE](THE FUGITIVE))

Kitty Pryde (an X-Men mutant, attended the UofC after the apparent death of her crush, Colossus)

Harold “Hal” Dobbs (UChicago Mathematics PhD student of a professor named Robert in the play & movie Proof. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_(play)</a> )

Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) - Harvard Law School

Elaine Benes (Seinfeld) - Tufts (she claimed to have attended Tufts as a safety so that means that she attended Tufts long before the “reach-for-anyone” era)

Donald Craig (Tobruk) - McGill (the producers of that movie made him a Redman because the actor playing him couldn’t speak English with an English accent)

Walter Langkowski (Sasquatch) - McGill (he was one of the guys that investigated Hulk’s creation)

Leonard McCoy (Star Trek) - Ole Miss (as a pre-med)

Mei Ling (Metal Gear Solid Series) - MIT
Gordon Freeman (Half-Life Seires) - MIT

Basically if you want your audience to know the character is proficient in science and mathematics, just say they went to MIT.

Andy on The Office is a Cornell grad. Many of his undergrad musings are accurate !

Bart Simpson - Harvard Law School (he became a Chief Justice of the SCOTUS)
Lisa Simpson - Yale (I assume she got a full-ride from the 10% plan but she dreamed of Harvard at age 8)

Marshal, Ted Mosby, Lily (How I met your mother) = Columbia

Marshal, Ted Mosby, Lily (How I met your mother) = Columbia

@codeguy: Not true! They all went to Wesleyan undergrad, Marshall went to Columbia Law and Ted teaches at Columbia. I assume Ted went to grad school since he’s an architect which Wesleyan doesn’t offer, but it never says where he went.

George Michael Bluth (from Arrested Development) - UCI

Michael Crichton uses this a lot. In the Jurassic Park novels, Sarah Harding went to UChicago…I forget where all of the other characters were supposed to be from. In Sphere, there was an astrophysicist from Caltech that works at the JPL in the time frame of the novel. There are also a couple of characters from Berkeley, and Harvard as I recall.

^Speaking of Crichton, the cast of “Micro” is made up almost entirely of MIT and Harvard researchers.

I’m sure Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction didn’t go to UC Santa Cruz

but he did wear the Slug t-shirt

I forgot about Micro, that’s correct, nearly all of them are Harvard/MIT grads. As I recall, Prey also has quite a few MIT grads in it as well.

Crichtons books are always very heavily science oriented though, so this is something that’s really included in all of his books. Lots of grads from the big names…Harvard, MIT, UChicago, Berkeley, Caltech etc…
