Filing taxes on summer internship salary (W2)

I got a summer internship this summer and the employer did not take out taxes in my paycheck. The human resource lady said she will be mailing a W2 later on. I was just wondering if I have to file taxes (salary was less than $5000)? By the way I am a dependent college student who is going to be a junior this fall.

If you have no other income at all (no taxable grants/scholarships, no unearned income, no other eaerned income) then $5000 is below the cut off for being required to file (the standard deduction for 2011 is anticipated to be $5800, it was $5700 for 2010).

All earned income must pay FICA and Medicare taxes. If no taxes were withheld, then the OP needs to file in order to pay FICA and Medicare. The OP may also owe state income taxes. States have different income exclusions.

If OP is getting a W2 than FICA and Medicare have been taken out. Otherwise OP would get a 1099

Definitely be sure to check your state’s filing requirements. Our state requires filing for income in excess of $3600, which is quite a bit lower than the federal requirement. My D had to file state & federal returns last year for her income from scholarships & an assistanceship … she owed a lot more to the state than she did to the feds!
