I’ve volunteered to help a family friend find a pharmacy able to fill their Adderall prescription, since I have time to devote to this and this person does not.
Any tips or recommendations on how best to proceed?

I’ve had luck with Costco (and you don’t need to be a member to use their pharmacy). But, the best luck might be to wait until Sept 1 when they get a new monthly quota. Other than that, start calling pharmacies to find out who has some in stock (and know the type and amount you need filled – mg dosage, IR vs XR, etc.) And be ready to head over to whichever pharmacy says they have some before someone else snags it.
Our CVS was out of the correct strength of his Vyvanse (70 mg) but had 50 and 20 mg pills. His doctor wrote a new prescription for those lower doses so they added up to 70 mg via two pills instead of one.
I definitely agree about calling around. That’s the best way to find it. Once I find it, I call my husband’s doctor and ask them to send the script over to the store as soon as possible. They have been very accommodating because they are aware of the shortage.
We’ve had luck with pharmacies in grocery stores here…Pick N Save and Metro Market (which are versions of Kroger).
I love Costco. It’s so much cheaper than what I pay with Anthem!
One time, I noticed the cost was higher than what I was used to. When I called, they said insurance wouldn’t pay for three months worth so I had to pay it all. I reminded them that I hadn’t provided insurance information. They apologized and lowered the cost. ?!?
It was caught in an RX shortage situation a while ago. I went from pharmacy to pharmacy. When I found one that had my RX, I called the docs office right there on the spot and waited until they electronically sent the RX where I was. The pharmacists knew the issue and so did my docs office…and both were very helpful.
walgreens here did not have his adhd meds but our local walmart did.
My daughter has had to call around every month. She takes it for both adhd and narcolepsy and it’s so hard when she cannot get it.
The pharmacies here are reluctant (or won’t) give this info over the phone. They also don’t like to give out the manufacturer, and some function much better than others for my daughter.
The quotas are very frustrating, as the shortages routinely happen every fall as school begins.
She uses GoodRx, both because it’s cheaper and her insurance would require a 30 day fill. The inefficiencies of our medical system drive me to the brink.
Thanks, everyone, for your responses!
I called the closest CVS first this morning (mostly because they were already open) and was told they had enough on hand to fill about 10 prescriptions today.
I have not yet heard back if the person needing the medication was indeed able to get it filled.
I’ve put together my list of places to call, including Costco and grocery store pharmacies – thanks for the tips!
