I hear great things about the film program, but I it's never realyl first hand information. Can anyone talk about the film department at Wesleyan? Are their opportunities to do the major with a more practical focus opposed to a theoretical one? Is this the best program other than professional/graduate schools? Thanks, I would really appreciate any comments

I can tell you that when I visited I talked to someone in the film program and he basically told me the general stuff; great program, but competitive. It's one of the most popular majors, and the first course is a weeder course where you have to keep up a minimum grade to progress. Very, very renowned program.

That would be horrible if I basically came there for the program and didn't even get it...Do people have a relatively easy time finding jobs in Hollywood or New York afterwards also?

The "weeder" classes aren't that bad. They are Film 304 and Film 310, "History of Cinema to WWII" and "History of Cinema, WWII to Present". You need to get a B+ in both to be able to automatically get into the major. If you don't, you have to apply. Some people don't get in but numerically speaking I think the majority of people who seriously pursue it get to pick it up. I got a B+ in Film 310 and I'm about as far from a film major as one can get.

Also, I hear that the film program has a nice alumni network for after you graduate - I don't know firsthand, but that's what I keep hearing.

Every senior is given the name of at least one alumni contact in either New York or Hollywood; they will help find them places to live and entry-level jobs in the industry. It's been described as an "underground railroad" for Wesleyan film graduates; the results over the years have been beyond what anyone could have imagined when the major was first proposed over thirty years ago.

I've heard mention of the 'Wesleyan Mafia' in Hollywood, which basically is every filmmaker in Hollywood is somehow connected to Wesleyan. ;)

its getting more and more appealing each post :)
