I am currently a first year at CSULB and initially chose to come here for their reputable film program (other than USC/UCLA). Ive done some research and found that film degrees are close to worthless when it comes to finding a job. I still want to work in the film industry but am thinking about changing my major (possibly to business mgmt or finance). Will a degree in business with a minor in film still have a generous outlook in finding a job in film? Will I lose all possible connections/opportunities that a film major may have to find internships? Are there any other majors I should consider that can land me a job in the film industry?

People go to film school for different reasons. I will be attending (hopefully) because I have a lot of learning to do before I throw myself out into probably the most cut throat industry in the world. The other reason I would like to attend is for networking. Film school can give you connections with industry professionals, it can open doors for internships and your classmates will more than likely be people you’ll be working with/for in the future. In my situation, I know I’d be practically disowned from my family if I didn’t get some kind of degree, and since it costs so much to go to school nowadays I wouldn’t want to waste money doing something I didn’t enjoy.

That isn’t to say you’re going to fail miserably in the industry. In fact, a lot of professionals didn’t go to film school in any sense of the term. I wouldn’t go as far as saying most, but many just go out to LA or NY and work their way up from coffee boy/girl.

The thing is, it’s not the degree that’s going to get you the job, it’s the quality and creativity of your work that will. Whether that means you should spend time at a film school learning or out in the industry itself is completely up to you. I don’t think it’s fair to say that film school is worthless. There are definitely pros and cons to both.
