The Colleges:
1. Indiana University Bloomington
2. Ithaca College
3. Juniata College
4. Ohio State University Columbus
5. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey New Brunswick
6. Skidmore College
7. State University of New York at Albany
8. State University of New York at Binghamton
9. Temple University
10. University of Pittsburgh
11. University of Georgia
12. Mercer University

How do you think these schools are for me? Safety, Match, Reach?

Juniata and Skidmore are tiny, the rest are very big. Any particular reason why these schools attracted you?

Otherwise, I like your list. You might consider adding a true reach, like UWisconsin-Madison and another solid high match, University of Maryland-College Park.

oh, whoops! skidmore was not supposed to be on there anymore...

The reason I'm attracted to Juniata is because of their science dept. I hear they have an excellent rate into Med school. I'm going to visit several of those schools in October and I wanted to also have a smaller size school to see which I like best.

UW-Madison was on my list, but then I heard that they don't give out much merit money (which i will seriously need...if going out of state, which is what i really want) .

If you're looking to get scholarships, aiming slightly lower is always smart. That said, I think you picked well, and have a really good shot at getting money from most of the schools on your list (except for Pitt, which tends be a bit more selective than the others).

I don't think you need to add more. 12 applications are more than enough.

But if you really want to add another, or trade one of the existing schools out, I'd recommend Miami Ohio. Their med school placement statistics are amazing.

What's your intended major? Will you be minoring or double majoring in dance (with a science, since you're interested in pre-med)? I ask because my d also has extensive dance ECs and wants to combine a dance minor with either a history or pre-med major. Unfortunately, there haven't been as many schools as she expected with strong ballet offerings for non-majors.

So I guess I'd suggest figuring out how much you want to continue to dance, and then make sure you're applying to schools that will allow you to do that (either on or off campus). IU is supposed to have one of the very top/most selective ballet programs in the country, but, as my d understands it, the ballet dept. is for majors only. My d also likes Pitt, but I don't think there's a dance minor there, though dance clubs on campus do offer weekly classes. My d is looking into whether these will be enough, or if she might have to look for some off-campus classes as well.

Skidmore is strong in both sciences and dance, with a nice med school placement rate. Though it's certainly smaller than the state schools on your list, it has a nice reputation and would probably be a match/short reach for you. Have you visited? It's in a very cool area. Good luck!

My intended major is Biology and do a Pre-med track. I would really love to minor in dance. I really do want to continue dancing during college. It is my passion and I could not see stopping cold turkey just because of going to college. I have also heard of IU's ballet program, but was unaware that it is only for majors. I will have to look into that.

I am planning on taking a trip up north in October to look at seven of those schools. Ithaca, Albany, Rutgers, Temple, Juniata, Binghamton, and Pitt. Do you think I could call some of the schools up to ask if I could watch a class?

I actually took Skidmore off my list because I read that they do not give out much merit-based money...or at least for my stats. My dad will only have 40k saved up for my undergraduate career and I would really not like to have to take out loans.

My daughter emailed several of the schools on her list and asked if she could either take or watch a class. All but one welcomed her to take class; the remaining school welcomed her to observe. I think it will demonstrate your interest if you can arrange to take a class.

Another school for you to consider, since you have several other publics on your list: James Madison University in VA. Very good dance program and opportunities for non-majors. My d decided against it after a campus visit (beautiful campus but just didn't resonate with my d), but it might be just right for you.

Did she email the admissions dept or specifically the dance dept?

I will have to look into James Madison as well, although I would not be able to visit because I have already used all of my college visit days. =[

^^^ She did everything by emailing the dance department. She looked up class schedules on line and requested the particular days and levels she wanted. One nice benefit - she was allowed to take these classes for free! When she checked out private local studios in some of the towns near schools she's interested in, she of course paid a per-class fee.

If you are looking for good prep for med school and great merit money, you should take a look at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA. It's in suburban philadelphia and has a remarkable history of successfull med school placement. They are very responsive to prospects. I don't know anything about their dance programs. Definitely worth a look.
