To these type of college summer school programs, I don’t think the acceptance rate is very low though. Basically if you are interested and have a decent grade, you will get in. I applied very late for Harvard SSP last year, didn’t have time to write a very good essay, and still got in. I signed up for a Standford Summer school account, ended up not submitting the whole application, and they kept asking me to send the application even if the deadline is over. I guess very prestigious programs won’t do that. So anyway I didn’t go in the end, and spent my summer on some test preps and a job.

i COMPLETELY dissagree with you. I am very intellegent and as a sophomore from NJ, i did not stay in the dorms, i commuted. I learned sooo much that its still affecting me today. I did architecture

My daughter just got into the Columbia writing program. I can’t decide whether to send her or whether to look for another program, so thanks for your comments and opinions, everyone. It sounds like the bottom line is that you get out of it what you put in. If you want to learn, you have the opportunity, and if you want to party, you can choose that path. I think learning the academics is important, but this is an opportunity for her to have a cultural experience of living in a completely different environment than what we have now (NYC) and finding out what it would be like to go to school on the east coast.

I got admitted to communicating with consumers. Anyone got in? it’s session 2

so…I suppose since 2008 this program has not improved??? my daughter is considering it

I took the Intensive Chemistry Seminar summer 2009 and loved it. We met for about 5 hours a day which made it intense, but we didn’t get much homework. I got a great recommendation that helped me get into some other selective science programs this year. The party/hookup scene was certainly not what dominated the social scene, most kids were easygoing and interesting, and I had a great 3 weeks.

hey I applied for Columbia University Communicationg with Comsumers: marketing, adverttising. and I got accepted. Has anyone participated in this program??
if you have please tell me how it is!!

Hi cutiexox

we definetly should!!
my msn is jessica939@live.com add me :)

who got into the science of psychology ?

heyy lauangela
i got in the communicating with consumers course too.

hi plainjerry,
that’s cool. where u from?
it’s great i met people prior to the course!

I sent in an application to attend the Columbia University Summer Program, and I was really excited to attend until I saw some of these negative opinions. I’d appreciate if someone who honestly attended the camp could tell me exactly what to expect from my experience. And also, will this experience affect my acceptance into Columbia University? Because it’s my dream school.

hey, I’m attending session 2 Introduction to Architectural Design and Theory. Is anyone else taking this course? I also saw on the website that this program was closed… how many students usually attend a program that is full?

Thanks.

Sorry you got ripped off.

I haven’t read the whole thread yet but it sounds a lot like the Ivy League and/or small LAC experience to me. One big giant 4 year expensive summer camp for the rich and spoiled. Oh, wait, that isn’t being fair. The Ivies will make it affordable, not sure about the desperate to get students small LAC’s, so it isn’t expensive but otherwise I am quite suspicious of what all those “selective” colleges are offering.

Holy shizzle, seven thousand dollars is a LOT for three weeks! I’ve never heard of this summer camp (not that I’ve heard of very many.) That’s a lot of money, and I agree with you - it IS a waste, considering what you just told everyone. I’ll make sure my family never ever thinks of making me go there  Haha. Not that we would; it’s waaaaay too expensive.

I must say I had a very different experience. Yes, it does seem to accept most of its applicants, but I got A LOT out of it…much more than I got out of my own English class this year. I took that Expository Writing and Study Skills Course for Freshman and Sophomores. I may have been lucky with my professors and fellow students, but I had a very small class and really got to know my professors. If you take advantage of potential 1 on 1 experience and allow the professors to get to know you then the course can be extremely valuable. It may not be the best program to put on your college resume because you essentially pay your way into it, but like i said…it’s a worthwhile learning experience.

REVERSEPSYCH: which class did you take… im hoping to attend in 2011, and i would like to steer clear of your class due to its minimal attendance?

Which classes are attended by 50-100 people?
