Hi, I am a 2nd year college student and I am looking at a couple of majors, one of them being Finance. I am a Marketing major right now and I am not very sure about continuing ahead with this major. Also my dad has his own business. He handles it himself, and there are no labors. As it looks, I am pretty certain that I will carry forward my dad's business. This is where I need you people's help.. Should I consider Finance as my major? I very much enjoy accounting, even if I find it a tough, I enjoy it. Whereas Marketing, it has more of a social environment, which to be honest is not my type. International Business will allow me to gain knowledge about all around the world. So, is Finance the most suitable choice for me or International Business? Thank you.

What is your father’s business?

Jewelry. But we are not in a very good financial state, so I want to make a correct decision.

Thank you. A finance major doesn’t seem to go with the jewelry business. That puts you in line for jobs like banking and investments. Some knowledge of accounting and taxes is good no matter what the business. However, it would seem to me that jewelry is very much about marketing. I can also see your rationale for IB in that jewelry is a world-wide business so that would come in handy in learning about things like currency, foreign regulations, and business practices around the world. Of course if it is fabricating, a knowledge of metals is good but you probably will learn that from your father.

If you like accounting why not do that?

As a stand alone major, of the three finance is the best, assuming your school is known equally well for all of three majors. I’m not sure if you want to/can double major but that could be something to consider as well.

Why do you say that Dedalussayshi? What experience do you have to suggest that?

I say that for the following reasons:
International Business while a great major to double major in, is generally not seen as a core business major. Unless the school that the OP is going to is well known for its IB program that wouldn’t be a great choice. Furthermore since the OP’s jewelry store is family run I’m assuming it is smaller, and thus doesn’t have a lot of international dealings. I agree that is an assumption, but I feel it is a logical one.

Marketing is a good major but some of the research I’ve done has indicated that it isn’t as easy to get a job in marketing as it is in finance. While the argument can be made that marketing would better prepare him for the communication and skills needed to run a jewelry store he stated that it isn’t doing very well. Also communication and basic marketing courses can be taken in addition to a finance major. (at my school some business communication courses are actually counted as meeting an English requirement so its two birds with one stone) Again there are some assumptions that are taking place here, first that both majors are equally ranked at the OP’s school, second the OP is just as (if not more) interested in prospects outside the jewelry store as he is in running the jewelry store and third, the OP’s schedule allows him the flexibility to take some basic marketing courses.

Finance is the a major that is very flexible and it can help the OP with his jewelry store as well as in providing multiple opportunities elsewhere. The OP expressed an interest in accounting, which means that he has a good chance of finding finance captivating as well. A major assumption that I’m making is that all three majors are equally prestigious at the OP’s school. If the marketing major is well known while the finance major is more obscure at his school, then it would make sense for him to do that. Furthermore, I have no knowledge of the OP’s personality, so I have no idea regarding his innate skills in interpersonal skills, creativity etc. Due to this I can recommend finance as an alternative that will serve him well regardless. As someone who enjoys accounting he most likely has skills regarding math, thus he should be able to do well in Finance.

Hope that makes sense, obviously I’m not all knowing, so that’s just my two cents.
(geo1113 I feel like I am focusing on more than just the jewelry business aspect of the OP while you are seeing that as a main factor. Depending on the OP’s personal preference he will have to make a determination)

Also the OP has indicated that he wants to leave marketing and gives us the following options:
“So, is Finance the most suitable choice for me or International Business?”

Dedalussayshi, the jewelry business is the main factor.

Father is self-employed with no employees and he wants to follow. That is why I said knowledge of accounting and taxes is a good thing. But finance makes no sense. Accounting would be a better choice.

Unfortunately in my college they don’t provide Accounting as a major. As mentioned before, I am not much interested in Marketing due to it’s ‘social environment’, which I say is because I personally feel I am not very interactive with people, or don’t like communicating constantly for a long time. This leaves me with International Business and Finance as a choice, but I wouldn’t mind ‘torturing’ myself ahead with Marketing if it could help me enhance my dad’s current business.

Apart from just deciding the major I have now made a decision of considering a minor program as well, and yet again I need help from one from Travel Industry Management (TIM) and Psychology. Sorry for being a bug, but I just want to make the correct decision. Thank you.

I understand. Where do you go to college? I will look it over and perhaps I can better suggest. If you aren’t comfortable putting it in public, you can always send me a private message.

Mahidol University International College, Salaya, Thailand.

Thank you, Nikhil. I actually like the IB program. It gives you a couple classes in finance and that should cover you. It looks like you can take accounting through Intermediate 2 for you electives and that can’t hurt. Also, as one of your IB elective, they offer practical business training which would be good. Also, I like the class in Business Economics - Economics of strategy.

As for your minor, I don’t see TIM being helpful. The psychology minor has some good classes. Psych is good in that it deals with behavior.

I don’t know if you considered any other minors. There were some good courses in the international studies minor, e.g. economic geogrpahy and global resources. Also, I wondered if any of the foreign language areas could be helpful in your trade.

Yeah, I think I will most probably change my major to IB. About the minor, I guess you are right again, TIM wouldn’t be very helpful. For the foreign language, I have done Pre-Intermediate Spanish I and II. Not very fond of Spanish but I see a brighter future with it than any other minors’. But I would still keep Psychology in consideration. Yet again, Thank you for the detailed responses, they were extremely helpful in narrowing down my choices. Thank you everybody.
