I’m having a hard time deciding on a major. My heart is divided between computer science and business. The stock market and financial world really interest me, but learning about computers is appealing too. Which would be a better choice?
How are we supposed to tell you which major is a better major; that’s way too subjective.
Can you tell us a little more about your interests? What are you best at subject-wise? Have you taken intro courses for both subjects? Have you taken career assessments?
A lot of people are doubling in business and CS these days. There are tons of financial tech jobs (Jane St., to name a really prominent one, and Bank of America). You should also look up quantitative analysts, or quants. Not only do they make big money, but they are the future of Wall Street and stocks. It uses machine learning, a hot CS topic.
I have some friends who major just in CS and end up working in fintech, if you’re not interested in the double major. It is just as valuable.
@Jpgrainier I don’t really have much of an interest in a specific subject because I like everything. I’m decent in all subjects, but probably better in the math and science categories. I have recently started my first intro to programming course, and I didn’t start any courses for finance yet. Lastly, I don’t think the career assessments help me out that much.
Once you take your first course in finance, you may be able to make a more informed decision based on what you’d like to study. In the mean time, do some research on various types of careers - maybe do some informational interviews or read about them online. By thinking a lot you may identify which kinds of careers appeal to you and have an easier time making a choice.
As others have said, CS is becoming more relevant for finance. Some schools are offering financial engineering degrees too
