As of lately, I've been very confused in terms of which major would benefit me more with my dreams of becoming an entrepreneur (particularly in the nightlife, real estate, and trucking industries). I want to double major in Communications, but I have to decide which type of business degree would be best suited for me. I hear Finance is more involved with numbers, analyzing, and statistics... Which could be beneficial for me in terms of acquiring the ability to help me decide what would be better investments for my business's. Yet, on the other hand, I heard Business Management kind of teaches you the generalization of business as a whole, not really anything specific. I heard though that Management is mostly for people that go on to work as managers and such at places like Target, which I have no desire to do. Plus, I rather study and be good at one thing specific, as if I were to study Finance, as opposed to going into Management, studying all things related to business, but taking away from it mediocre lessons since I did not spend my time focusing on one thing in particular and mastering it... But I don't know. Which major do you guys think would help me out more? :)

C’mon… 150 views and not even one opinion?? Anybody? :)

What do you mean by “entrepreneur?” That could be an enterprising employee at a big company, who knows how to make money for his company; it could be someone who starts his own business; it could be someone who starts several businesses (I swear, if I see one more person use an apostrophe to pluralize something, I’m going to scream… the plural of “business” is “businesses,” not “business’s”).

Your major really doesn’t matter for any of those things, though. It’s your personality and your drive that determine what you wind up doing (available capital is a plus, too!). Realistically, you probably won’t start a business in college; while some wildly successful people have done that, the vast majority of businesses start when someone has experience in an industry and realizes he can do it better.

I’ve seen entrepreneurs who majored in CompSci, Econ, Communications, etc., even ones who never attended college. In general, you don’t need an education in business to be an entrepreneur (pursuing an MBA to be an entrepreneur is laughable). If I were you, I’d think about a specific job that you are interested in pursuing after college if your entrepreneurial aspirations don’t work out right away. It should be in an industry that helps you gain the skills and make the connections to start your business later. You have the right idea in that majors in finance and management prepare you for specific types of careers. I don’t think finance would be the best option, since it’s pretty narrow. But I’d look into a job in consulting out of college because you get exposed to different industries through your work.

Also, I recommend reading Madison Hildebrand’s book if you’re interested in real estate. He’s the one on Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing.

Thanks ambition44!!!
