Financial Aid 529 Plan

Hi,

I have an unusual situation pertaining to a 529 plan. My grandparents withdrew all of the money from a 529 plan that I am the beneficiary of. The plan is closed (to my knowledge) now. This was withdrawn in 2014, however they sent the check for the money to me in 2015 AFTER I filed my FAFSA. I contacted support for the FAFSA and the person told me that because I received the check in 2015 and because it has not been cashed it does not have to be reported on this year’s FAFSA. However, I talked to another person from support and they told me that different schools handle 529s in their own way. Does anyone know how Rutgers handles 529 plans?

I would speak to someone at the Rutgers FA office.

I can’t find a phone number so maybe post that you have a specific question and ask someone to contact you.

Seems like the withdrawal should occur in the same calendar year as the expenses incurred.
