Ok, so my family has a pretty good sized income of about 250k+, but i want to apply ED to the college of W&M. by applying ED i feel that my chances are good to get in but i'm afraid that i might not get any aid. any advice?

With that income you will be extremely unlikely to get any need based aid anywhere. All you might get is merit based aid.

The drawback with applying ED is that you can not compare the merit offers you get from different schools before making a final decision (because you will not know what other schools might offer). So it really depends on whether your parents are willing to pay whatever W&M will cost without seeing what your other options may be.

Yeah, I’ve heard that once your parents make over 180,000 that you’ll get almost no financial aid. Merit scholarships are your only shot at getting money, but if you apply ED you’ll never even be able to compare.
I’d recommend not applying to ED if you wanna check out other offers.

Were you thinking you might get some NEED based aid? That is very unlikely.

Check the W&M website for any guaranteed MERIT scholarships…if there are some, it won’t matter if you apply RD or ED…but the biggest point is made by Swimcatsmom…the ONLY merit offer you will have IF you get accepted ED is the one from William and Mary. If your parents are able to pay for you to attend, then it is not an issue. If they WANT you to get a merit scholarship and would like to compare offers…ED won’t work.

It doesn’t matter if you apply ED or RD, your family makes too much money.

The FA World assumes that your family’s income is high enough that they should have been saving for college…and that they can pay some out of current income and they can afford to borrow as well.

You need to get some clarification from your parents. You need to explain to them NOW, that they earn too much for you to get need-based aid from any school. Then you need to ask them how much they WILL pay each year.

If they can’t pay for all college costs, then you need to apply to some schools that will give you large merit scholarships.

So…go have the “money talk” with the folks and come back.

by the way i’m from NY, but my grades are not the best in the world. My average is about 83-86, i’m re-taking my SAT,

BTW…you’re out of state for W&M…a public univ…you wouldn’t likely get much FA even if you were low income. State U’s give their aid to instate students.

OOS publics charge high tuition to OOS students for a reason.

ok well my parents would have the equivalent of 2.5 to 3 years of W&M saved already. although they have money saved up, i don’t want it to leave it all on them so I’ve been looking around to get money to try to ease their end

Then you need to look for MERIT aid. Your family is not going to get need based aid ANYWHERE…income is way too high AND you have a college savings.

If you get a job every summer AND take out the Stafford loan in your name, you could cover about $8000 a year…or so in college expenses. That might be one way to ease the financial costs for your parents.
