Financial Aid at Binghamton for In-State Student?

I'm an in-state student that might be forced to go to Binghamton due to financial necessity... my friend at Binghamton said the tuition is basically 16K for all NYers, and that few scholarships/grants are offered because "the tuition is already so cheap."

Is this true or would Binghamton offer any non-loan financial aid to a NY student with great credentials?

It is true that Binghamton does not give out many scholarships based on Merit. There are a lot of scholarships that you can apply for but you need to show financial need. I personally suggest looking into scholarships outside of the school that might be able to help you out. Here is a link on the binghamton site all about scholarships: [Financial Aid: Scholarships](http://bingfa.binghamton.edu/scholar.htm) and types of financial aid: [Types of Financial Aid](http://bingfa.binghamton.edu/apps_types.htm)

You can contact the Financial Aid office for more specific questions at [Binghamton University - Admisiions: Contact and Meet Us: Contact Forms: Financial Aid Contact Form](http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/contact-and-meet-us/contact-forms/financial-aid-contact.html)

from what I hear, Binghamton begins rewarding academic scholarships when students are in their sophomore year.

Thus, students who prove themselves at Bing will receive monetary aid. Am I right?

There are scholarships for students entering as freshman but from what I understand, many of the within-school scholarships such as ones given out by different departments do require you to be a sophomore or above. Generally the merit scholarships are the ones that you have to prove yourself for mentioned by Technomancer.

Birdy - why not look at out of state schools that you might be able to get substantial scholarships from? Maybe schools in other states looking to attract out of state students?

We just got a full tuition scholarship from an out of state school that makes it significantly less than any SUNY.

Just a thought.
