Financial aid at Brown

How generous is it? My family makes about $200k/yr.

Don’t expect any aid from Brown. My parents’ combined income was a little under 150K and Brown gave me absolutely nothing. In contrast, Princeton gave me 23K in grants. Brown’s endowment is simply not large enough to provide financial aid for the upper middle class.

Brown has made a commitment to use its financial aid dollars for low-income and middle-class families. So unless there are extenuating circumstances (other siblings in college, for example), don’t expect any grants if your family earns $200,000+/year. (And I doubt even HYP would give aid to a family that earns $200,000 – that’s a family that is among the wealthiest in the country. Not “upper middle class.”).

What if my sister starts college the year after me?

Even then, you would only qualify for financial aid during the time your sister is in college. You would still have to pay full freight for at least a year.

What about a family earning roughly 120k a year? Would that qualify me for some financial aid from Brown? Just wondering, thanks :)

It’s tough to tell Rhaegar. I was in that boat this year and originally only got a 3500 loan. After appealing and several emails and calls, I got it bumped up to 8000 scholarships and 9000 loans + workstudy. APPEALING IS THE KEY. For the 3 colleges I was decided between, I got an average of an 8000 boost in scholarship upon appeal.
