Financial Aid at Lehigh?

I love Lehigh, but it's over 50k to attend. I was reading the stats on financial aid for the school, but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with this? Do they offer good financial aid, or should I take it off my list?

They offer amazing financial aid. I’m moving in as a freshman this thursday. I didn’t think i’d get enough money but im pretty much good to go. So just apply—it’s need blind, and they’ll give you what you need.

Yeah… depends.

You might hear those stories like the person above me, but i just transferred into lehigh and got… ready? $0 financial aid for the year.

Still worth it IMO. Just apply and see what happens, you have nothing to lose.

oh, and i’m not a rich kid either.

On their website they have a link to calculate how much your family can contribute, and Lehigh claims they will cover the rest in loans, grants, and work-study. Does anyone know if Lehigh stays true to their word about this?

Lehigh’s fin aid is kinda merit + need-based , according to an officer from fin aid office. The amount depends both on your academic achievements and your family’s demonstrated need.
But it’s not 100% need-met, I think.

I think it’s also need-sensitive.
I am intel’ from Myanmar. I applied Lehigh thro ED2 for fall 2010 but didn’t get in. Most of my frds who were in top ten list of the whole Myanmar didn’t get in either. That may be due to our great financial need. Some did get in but were asked to pay full cost.

Well, that’s just my experience. Anyone has any idea or experience abt fin aid? esp intels’

It all depends. I am getting most of tuition. However, some people on my floor are getting absolutly nothing. It all depends on need based aid

hey just wanted to know how hard is it for internationals to get aid?

International does not get aid.

from college board

@android808 that is not true, they give financial to international students. Financial aid is limited and therefore is very competitive.

Directly from Lehigh website: [Lehigh University: International Students: FAQs](http://www4.lehigh.edu/admissions/undergrad/intl/faq.aspx#aid)

Do you offer financial aid for international students?

Lehigh does offer financial aid to international students on a very limited basis. This means that the competition for financial aid is very keen. In evaluating students for aid, we consider a combination of the student’s academic & extracurricular achievements and the student/family need for financial assistance. Therefore, our financial aid is a combination of merit and need-based aid. The amount of financial aid a student receives is determined on an individual basis and it is not possible to estimate a financial aid package until Lehigh has received the complete admissions and financial aid applications.

What kind of stats would you need for merit aid? If anyone here has received any merit aid at all, I would love to know what S has to aim for.

It’s worth reading the excellent article in the Alumni Bulletin entitled [‘The Lucy 13’](<a href=“http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/lehigh/alumni_2009fall/#/24]'The”>http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/lehigh/alumni_2009fall/#/24) to get some insight into the recruitment process at Lehigh. Here’s one important bit of information shared in the piece:

Stats are just one component of a candidate’s profile. Lehigh puts a lot of thought into extending an offer (with and without merit aid) to individuals that will complement the Lehigh community. For more, see [Thoughts on ‘Chances’](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/lehigh-university/763789-thoughts-chances.html).

Thanks, StitchinTime. I know there’s a lot that goes into an attractive student to Lehigh. My S is only a soph and has already visited and sent an email to admissions (demonstrated interest: check). Since this is only the very beginning of his process, I’m sure we will visit again. He is very well-rounded and community-service oriented. Has the grades so far (and don’t anticipate a major fall-off based on what kind of kid he is). As he begins studying for standardized testing, I thought it would be helpful to know more about that part of the puzzle.

LINYMOM, To your question about merit aid. It does really depend upon who else applies, so I think it kind of varies from year to year. If it helps, my son received the Dean’s Scholarship and was put in the Eckardt scholar program. His stats - 4.2 GPA, 2270/2400 SATs, AP Scholar with Distinction, Natl Merit Commended. I recommend meaningful community service (not just random things to fill a resume) and an essay that says something special about your son in a very creative way. Good luck!

Is there anyway for schools like Lehigh to take into consideration that the student is paying the loans. My parents would be expected to pay like 25 or 30K, but I can’t take that much out in loans each year. Does anyone else have this problem?

All middle class families have this problem. It is the big flaw in the system. We cannot get financial aid, but cannot afford the price tag. Colleges are cutting down on merit and middle class families make just over the typical cut off for financial aid. It stinks. I will tell you that since my son has been at Lehigh he has had other opportunities for scholarships based on his high GPA, so you can pick up more once you are there if you do well, but it is 1000 here and 1000 there. I think you will find most schools will offer you between 10 and 15K. If you have a younger sibling, that will help and you may be able to get financial aid when they get into college, but I feel your pain!

Many middle class families are being forced into the state schools because of this problem or forced to attend a lower level school who will offer more merit to get you to attend.

After freshman year you can also apply to be an RA (Gryphon) and then you have free room and half price food which would really help.

Son applied ED and was wait listed. His friend was accepted and only received $26k aid where I read the average was $36k and Calculator produced a number at $40k. My son also applied to Lafayette and received $48k grant. Not everyone is getting this big a package. Glad he was wait listed now. (FYI top grades etc on the profile all the extras. Also waitlist at local Ivy) So this Friday will make a decision. Lehigh is out for us.
