I’m concerned about financial aid because although my family has a relatively good middle class AGI (80,000), we really can’t afford sticker price to any college, especially Reed, which is my dream college. I’m from New Mexico and I’m black and latino, so even though I know they’re only supposed to give need aid, I heard that helps, but in all I really don’t know. I know I could probably go to an ivy league for free, but Reed is my goal and I’m just becoming disheartened. Any ideas or experiences with Reed?
FA at Reed is solely based on need (as they define it). The only merit they have is $2K for NMF. No reason not to apply and see what happens but they don’t have the deep pockets of an Ivy. Make sure you include a safety you can definitely afford and would be happy to attend.
I’m currently a student at Reed and have had a really good experience with their financial aid overall. My household income is similar to yours and they awarded me grants which almost covered my tuition. Granted, housing and their compulsory board plan still add up but as compared to a state school the difference isn’t as much as you’d think. Definitely worth a try, and contact their financial aid dept with any questions-- all of the administration here is incredibly kind and willing to work with you. Although I don’t know much about it they have been adding more aid programs relating to POC so that’s definitely something to look into as well.
