Financial Aid cancelled because I did not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

I tried checking my award letter and unfortunately i cannot be issued one because I did not meet my SAP. I am pretty sure it was because I did not complete at least 67% of my attempted credit hours.

What are my next steps? Do I have to transfer to a Community College or am I not allowed to go to College again?

I took out 3500 in loans to pay for school. I am really scared and do not know what to do right now. I am a freshman.

I’m sorry this happened to you. First think you need to do is make an appointmetn with your college’s financial aid office. Maybe there is a grace period or an amount of time you have to get your grades back up. You have to ask the questions. If you cannot afford to continue attending your college, then you have to start to decide whether you can get private loans, parent loans or whether it makes more sense for you to transfer to a place you can afford. Good luck!

Look up SAP policy at your school, likely online, so you understand it. You can file an appeal letter if you have some basis for it. If your are not dismissed from your college, then you can continue without federal aid if you can pay the tuition. When you are back in line with SAP requirements you can get aid again. . So if you have to leave, you can enroll in a CC but you will have to pay for it yourself as well. Make sure you don’t owe your school anything because you will need that paid before you can get transcripts to send to your new school.

You will need to begin payments on your loan if you don’t enroll in college within 6 months

Thank you both of you guys for the replies. Are you sure that I would have to pay out of pocket if I were to enroll in a CC? Isn’t my financial aid only cancelled for the University I am enrolled in?

Well you may have a point Each university has it’s own SAP policy but they are similar and in order to grant you federal aid you have to comply to it. So pick a CC and look up the SAP, see what they say about transfer units. It may ve possible to get aid if you find a more lenient SAP policy or one hat won’t count your previous semester in the same way. But if you care able to pass your gpa and credits attempted requirements, I’m not sure you should waste your federal aid allocations. Maybe go to work for a couple years until you can get it together. Keep your loan limits in mind.

@BrownParent I really hope that I can enroll in CC and receive aid. The classes that I did not complete were Non-credit classes and I really didn’t know that it could mess up my SAP.

That doesn’t sound right that classes with no credit could be part of ‘completion credits’ if they have no credit hours. Are you sure that you just didn’t sign up for enough actual credit classes? There has to be meaningful progress toward a degree. Did you read the SAP requirements? Is this mentioned?

Please list your classes, the credit for each and the grade.

The classes that I did not complete were:
Math 090 (5 credits, did not complete twice. total of 10 credits) Grade : U (unsatisfied)
HIST 101 (3 credits, Withdrew from class) Grade: W

Thanks a lot, by the way.

How are these non credit classes if they have credits?

I think by “non credit” the student may have meant to say that they were pass/fail rather than assigned a letter grade like A, B, C, etc. Is that right, @mentosfresh ?

A 090 credit class is not college level, not sure about Hist 101.
So you attempted Math 090 twice, but didn’t finish.
Is this a work at your own pace class?
Perhaps you would be more successful with a lecture course. Did you use a tutor?
I’m guessing you received a warning when you did not complete the course the first time?

The course numbering system depends on the school. A 090 course may be remedial, I think at most schools a 100 level class would be a freshmen level class. The OP will need to answer the questions that have been posed.

@DmitriR is right. The class is either a pass/fail for students to complete before moving onto the next course. The grade does not affect our GPA. I attempted it twice but did not finish.

Those classes would definitely affect your completion rate - which is the 67% requirement you mentioned in the original post.
