Financial aid deadline

@“aunt bea” CA schools isn’t the only reason for moving.

Yes I’m aware they won’t guarantee admission but I believe i have a high chance of getting in because all of my courses from my current CC will transfer to the CC in San Diego which means i can get my IGTEC and Business Admin AST that are required for SDSU ADT transfer pathway. I emailed SDSU and I’m waiting on their response. However, according to their website if my san diego cc notifies them that I’ll receive my Business admin AST in the CC I’ll get the priority admission. I also have CSUSM as plan B. Please share any info or comments on my plan if you have. Thank you.

Just be aware that I am not only speaking of having the appropriate coursework involved, I’m referring to your competition.

Many students, in the San Diego county CC’s (and we have lots of CC’s), as well as California CC’s, are attempting to get into SDSU. If you receive priority to get in, they don’t have to accept you; you may have to wait. Many CC students have to wait a year or two because the university is full and there just are too many great students. If the competition is between you and another student, who is similar but has had all coursework in California, guess who they may choose first?

Also, if you qualify for Pell, your parents may not have sufficient funds to qualify (credit-wise) to rent a place. Most places require first and last month’s rents. Purchasing a home in San Diego is a race that awards the highest bidders-there’s really not a whole lot of inventory now.

Be aware that California housing and the price of gas are astronomical. If your parents can afford to pay these costs, and OOS tuition for 1 year for two students ($42K x 2) then you may not qualify for Pell in the future.

I heard if they don’t accept me when I’m a priority they’ll usually redirect me to the closest CSU which’s San Marcos?

In their website they don’t mention comparing students for completed course work in California if I’m using the ADT transfer pathway.

Comparing students with completed coursework is not just for ADT transfers. All campuses especially impacted campuses will review your coursework prior to a decision so it is always beneficial to have the Golden 4 GE’s and major prep completed at time of application. Just another bump.

i will have all of the requirements by time of application. Hopefully the CC advisor can estimate my chances sincd he probably had similar situations in the past. I really need to make the move but the bump for the outside coursework is now getting me worried.

Does your family own a home in Illinois?

This all seems very rushed to me…and not well planned in terms of your college issues. I realize there are sometimes reasons for moves to need to take place abruptly. But this sounds like it’s all happening within 30-60 days.

Will you even be in CA in time for the January term start date?

No, we don’t. I agree it’s rushed, mostly due to family circumstances. Yes, I will be on time for January semester.

HEADS UP: I think you are under the assumption that once you are listed as a priority candidate that you are a shoe-in for automatic admission-no matter what. No one can give you a guarantee that you (specifically) will be admitted. It is based on GPA, coursework, and anything the university needs.

Just to give you a heads up from the Common Data Set provided by the university: For Fall 2018 admissions, SDSU received 94,000 applications. Out of those numbers, 25K were transfer applicants. Five thousand were admitted, and 3K were enrolled.

Maybe the university has a need for someone in marching band. Maybe the athletic department needs certain transfer athletes for their large sports programs. Whatever. Those students will take precedence. There are no guarantees because you are priority admission-it just means that you are prepared. It IS an impacted campus.
Fall 2019 had over 80K applicants.
Also for the Business department, the website states the following:

Until the SDSU Registrar certifies your OOS coursework, you wont know if you will have to retake courses.

@“aunt bea”
So what I’m thinking is that since I’ll finish my ADT and GE in a California cc and when I apply to SDSU the CC notifies them i have done their requirements through CC which means they’ll count just like any other regular ADT student.

From what I understood they’ll usually redirect priority students to CSUSM if they don’t get admitted. Is this true?

Possibly.

The campuses that have been listed for redirection in the past are:
Sonoma State
Channel Islands
Dominguez Hills
East Bay
San Francisco
Humboldt
Bakersfield

I have not seen San Marcos on the list, but the list can change each year since it is based on the campuses which still have capacity.

SDSU does their own transcript evaluations.

Until the REGISTRAR at SDSU certifies the transcript, and that those courses meet their requirements, the CC can say and do whatever they want.

Each school is a separate entity.
Each follows their own guidelines and rules.

SDSU is a CSU. The SDCCC’s have their own organization and they can’t FOR SURE, at this time, provide you with a 100% guarantee that you will be admitted to SDSU. Yes they have articulation agreements but, it depends on what SDSU needs.
There are no 100% guarantees and this is what you seem to be asking.

My advice: wait until you have actually moved and are actually taking coursework at a local CC. Until then, this is moot. Then visit SDSU, with your transcripts, and ask. The CC cannot speak for what SDSU admissions will do the year that you apply.

Agree with @Gumbymom, you may be redirected to a less impacted campus in another area of California if not admitted to SDSU.

Is it possible to apply to SDSU and CSUSM at the same time? From what I learned CSUSM has lower acceptance standards.

The move for me is almost mandatory but I’m really worried about the afterwards of completing the CC. San Diego doesn’t seem to have many options like in Chicago or am i missing something due to luck of knowledge.

You can apply up to 23 Cal state campuses which are all over California using the Cal State Apply application. The limitations would be costs $70/campus and major.

Also I highly suggest you apply to several Cal states. Is commuting a requirement?

Yes, I’ll need to commute.

If you have to commute from the San Diego area, then SDSU and CSUSM are probably your only options for the Cal states.

What universities would in the middle of the price range with good education?

What do you consider “in the middle of the price range”?

You have some financial constraints that prohibit you from paying more than instate tuition at a Cal State or UC.

If you have to commute from the San Diego area, then SDSU, CSU San Marcos, University of San Diego (private), Point Loma (private), San Diego Christian and University of California San Diego are probably the only options.

Cal States will be the most inexpensive with tuition at $7510/year followed by UC San Diego with tuition costs at $13.645. Any of the private colleges will be expensive anywhere from $40-50K/year for tuition.

If you are willing to consider moving farther from the San Diego area and live either on campus or nearby apartments/housing, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona would be good options and costs for in-state tuition/room/board would be around the $23-27K range. Much cheaper than private school tuition alone.
