Financial Aid Dilemma

Heres my situation:

I am 24, currently work full time and own a home (decided buying made more sense than renting). I got into UCLA and I would like to dedicate myself to school full-time and work part-time (and try to double major). I did not really qualify for any kind of grants and so far i have been awarded 0 in assistance (submitted FAFSA a few days after the deadline because I thought I had until Sept. 2nd!)

Basically, I don't even know where to start. I know the first step would be talking to the financial aid office at UCLA but I imagine it's going to be hard to find a loan for living expenses + school? Could anyone shed some light for me? I'm nervous trying to figure out how to make this happen!

You might PM kelsmom, she is a finaid officer.

If you are 24 then your parents income should not count in your EFC, how much equity do you have in your home? Also, if you are now working full time and will later not be doing that, when full time in school, there is a special form to fill out to show that prior income will not be available. I do not know if this applies to UG, but my med school DD did complete it as she has worked a year between UG & med school, but obviously would not be working full time when in med school.

If I were you I would make the effort to ensure your EFC was calculated properly before making any other decisions.

Have you received a letter from UCLA telling you that you have been awarded zero in financial aid, or simply not received anything at all? Do you know your EFC? You can find it on the SAR. Have you ever gotten any Federal/state financial aid for school before? Are you going to be considered a freshman? Are you commuting from your house?

All of these thing will make a difference on what your aid might be. As an independent freshman, you can borrow up to $9500 through Staffords.

You do need to call your financial aid director and ask about your application, and what options you have in terms of getting some of your need met.

Thanks for the quick replies. My EFC was 10135 I believe. My Financial Aid login in UCLA says 0 gift aid. Unfortunetly with the housing bubble burst I am pretty much paying exactly the value of the condo. Technically speaking I made under 40k in my taxes last year so I thought maybe I would be able to get some kind of assistance, but so far it all seems like a no go!

Missing the March 2 deadline is what is really hurting you. Your income is too high for Cal Grant as an independent (if you have no dependents other than a spouse), but, assuming you met all other requirements, you would have met the income ceiling requirement to have all systemwide fees covered by grants. The September 2 deadline is only for CCC students and is in relation to Cal Grant. The UC deadline for FAFSA is March 2. Cal Grant GPA verification deadline just happens to be the same date.

You can try to appeal, but they are, from my experience, very strict about deadlines in the UC system especially with the new round of budget cuts.

Well, my school submitted for the GPA cal grant verification automatically before the cal grant due date luckily, but I am not sure if that is going to help me at all since I was late on the FAFSA

GPA verification being submitted on time doesn’t help you at all without FAFSA having been submitted on time as well. Blue&Gold requires a Cal Grant application. A Cal Grant application consists of both a FAFSA and GPA verification being submitted by the March 2 deadline for the UCs.

I do hope something can be worked out, but the reality is you might be SOL because of that missed deadline for FAFSA.
