I had to appeal my financial aid this semester. While doing so my employer agreed to pick as a third part biller in order for me not to drop out. The cashiers office told me that all deductions would be made prior to any deposits into my account. Saying they would make sure my employer was reimbursed. Well because there were no notes in the system for the financial aid office and supposedly the accountant was on vacation the financial aid department deposited the full amount into my account 3 1/2 weeks ago. Today I received a bill for the amount that was previously agreed upon through my employer. The cashiers office really never billed them but had to make it look as though they did. Now they are wanting what the deposited back and the notice even your refund should have been this much and not what you actually got. To me this is an error on them and not me or am I the one at fault?
Does it really matter who is at fault? The school isn’t going to say that you can keep the extra money.
What is the issue - has the money been spent?
No, I still have the money. But at the end of the day that’s their mistake. If I were a teenager or a family that was struggling then yes it very well would have been spent. There have been several other issues besides this one with them having poor communication with other departments just didn’t post all of it.
you have to return the money. One way or the other, the college is going to get their money back, whether it is taking it out against any future financial aid or not allowing you to enroll because you will owe the school money. You know you have money that you should not have received. They know you have money that you should not have received. Return the money
If YOU had overpaid the college, wouldn’t you expect the college to refund that overpayment even though it was the college’s fault that it was overpaid?
If they gave you too much money…did you think you could keep it? The answer to that is…you have to pay it back.
Thank you all for your rude comments. But after a small meeting this morning with my student success center it was made clear it was an error made by the school. The correct documentation wasn’t noted for all departments to see, and the fact that I called upon receiving the funds and was told by the financial aid office I didn’t owe anyone. They will make the adjustments and NO I don’t owe them the money back.
No one was being rude. But in your first post…you made it sound as though the school disbursed money to you to which you were not entitled.
You indicated they told you your refund amount was in error as well.
Glad they got it fixed.
But you owe that money to your employer who paid it for you in advance?
You might want to edit future posts for clarity. Sorry, but some typos made it hard to follow.
Posters were not rude, they were frank, based on what you did write. Big difference.
You wrote: “Now they are wanting what the deposited back and the notice even your refund should have been this much and not what you actually got.” Now you say this has changed-?
Trust us, if they find an error, they will haunt you in various ways, til it’s reconciled. Do the right thing.
How much did your employer pay for you? If there were no deductions taken, either they never billed your boss or s/he didn’t get reimbursed. Have you asked your employer about it?
