Does anyone know of any colleges/universities that offer breaks
on tuition/room/board if a student does well on the SAT? My son
has a score of 1900 and I was wondering if that's good enough to
get us some money. Thank you.

Did he do good on the PSAT? There seems to be a lot more for people who did good on that (National merit).

He didn’t do as well on the PSAT. Can you not get national merit based solely on SAT scores?

A lot of colleges offer merit scholarships, but I have not seen any college that gives merit scholarships solely based on SAT scores. Usually it is a combination of SAT and/or ACT scores, GPA, class rank, rigor of high school classes, and extracurriculars. I know that UT Dallas has very nice merit scholarships; they give out a lot of full tuition+housing+stipend packages that are not difficult at all to get (1900 SAT in addition to other good stats would probably get you it).

National merit is based on PSAT scores. You can’t make National merit on SAT scores alone. you have to have the PSAT score to keep you in the competition.

“Financial aid” is typically “need-based” aid.

Merit scholarships are typically “academic based” aid.

It sounds like you’re looking for merit scholarships.

Yes…some schools do give merit scholarships based on SAT scores and GPA scores.

What is the breakdown of your son’s SAT?

What is his GPA?

Will he test again? His SAT isn’t really high enough for good sized merit at many of the schools that give merit. Have him also take the ACT.

If you know that a school gives merit scholarships for stats, then look what their mid range test scores are. If your child’s scores are well above the middle quartiles, then there’s a good chance your child will get a good merit scholarship.

For instance, if you were looking at UDelaware and your son’s SAT breakdown is math 630, CR 640, Writing 630…then your son’s scores are in the middle range…not quite high enough for a good chance at good merit. Scores should be well above those numbers to get good merit scholarship.

UDel middle quartile score ranges

SAT Critical Reading: 540 - 640
SAT Math: 550 - 660
SAT Writing: 540 - 650

My guess would be that a 2080+ SAT would be needed for a good amount of merit money from UDel.

But, if you look at some lower ranked schools, you may find schools where a 1900 SAT and a good GPA will get you some good merit. :)

How much merit do you want? Do you want half-tuition? Full tuition?

Obviously a $10k per year scholarship to a school that costs $30k is more meaningful than a $20k per year scholarship at a school that costs $50k

Are you looking to meet a particular budget?

Which schools does your son like? What’s his likely major?

BTW…Some schools have ASSURED scholarships for stats. If you have the stated stats, then you get the scholarship as long as you apply by any deadlines.
