I would like to know if public universities specially
1)UT Austin
2)Urbana Champagne
3)Michigan Ann-Arbor
offer need based aid to US citizens that are not residents of these respective states.
If yes please tell me about the forms which I will have to fill?!!!!
Also please tell me about other Public Universities that offer need based aid to state non-resident US citizens?

PPL please answer!!!

No, they don’t give financial aid to non-resident citizens.

OOS publics don’t give FA to OOS students (exception: UVa and UNC).

Most OOS publics don’t have enough money to meet need of their own residents, therefore they certainly don’t have the money to meet the need of OOS students (whose costs are even much higher).

UVA and UNC do give aid to non-res citizens - but those schools are also hard to get into.

If you are eligible for any federal aid they will still give you that. You do not need to be a resident citizen to get federal aid, just a citizen or an eligible permanent resident. All US citizens are eligible to apply for financial aid using FAFSA, which you should complete as soon as possible. What you receive will depend on you family income. It probably not cover anywhere near the cost of an OOS school.

What is your EFC?

If you don’t qualify for federal “free” money aid, then all you’d get is a Stafford loan, which won’t come close to covering the OOS costs for OOS publics (which range from about $25k-50k per year.

From the UMich financial aid website:

^ Those are the requirements for federal financial aid.

It would seem that is all that is available to non-resident US citizens (as swimcatsmom stated).

Romanigypseyeyes…

The OP is a CITIZEN!!!

He already could get fed aid (free money) if he qualifies income-wise.

What he WON’T get is the money needed to help pay the HUGE OOS costs that UMich and others charge.

Sorry, I misread. I thought he was an international. Wow :(. So sorry. Ignore my post!

No problem… :)

The problem is almost semantics…When people ask if OOS students can get FA from OOA publics, they’re usually looking at the big COA and wondering if their lowish EFC will qualify them for money to cover those huge OOS costs (often in the $35 - 50k range).

Therefore, mentioning things like Pell grants (which many don’t qualify for) or Stafford loans (which would cover about 1/7th the COA) can be misleading to the person who is really wanting aid to cover a big chunk of the COA.

The issue this student would have is that he would be an out of state student everywhere he applies. Many schools reserve their best scholarships for their in state students. MOST public universities don’t come close to meeting full need for anyone…not even their instate students. For students paying out of state costs, the gap is typically more.

*For students paying out of state costs, the gap is typically more. *

Exactly…and usually when someone is asking about FA at OOS publics, it’s because they know the OOS cost is high, and they’re hoping that they can get FA to pay those high costs.

Exactly…or they’ll offer OOS students scholarships, but they’ll need higher stats to get them.
