Financial Aid Help

Hello,

I was offered the Federal Direct Subsidized Loan and the Federal Direct Unsub. Stafford by my school. The total amount that they are offering me is about 8K. My question is with those two Federal Direct Unsub. Stafford and Federal Direct Subsidized Loan, if I accept them will I have to pay back anything to the gov.? In other words it says it is subsidized, and unsub. so I am guessing when it subsidized I don't have to pay because the government is promoting the education, but I am not sure? Please answer my question, thank you in advance.

Subsidized means that while you are in school, the US government pays the interest. All you will owe when you leave school is the loan.

Unsubsidized means that while you are in school, the interest accumulates. You can pay it while you are studying, or you can let it build up and pay it back along with the loan after you leave school.

Here is a good link that helps explain different student loans: [FinAid | Loans | Student Loans](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Student Loans - Finaid)

You pay all the loans back, regardless of the category. So you are on the hook for the whole caboodle.

You can not later get rid of the loan through claiming bankruptcy, so be sure you are prepared for the payments. Use a loan calculator to figure out what your payments will look like after college.

Do not “default” on your student loans. Meaning, if you fall behind even a few months and you are considered out of compliance with repayment, fees and penalties get assessed to your loan. It is not entirely unheard of for a student loan to almost double because of these penalties.

You sound as if you are just beginning to learn the terms and conditions of these loans. Be sure to know what you are getting into completely before signing the loans, because “not knowing” won’t make the problems go away!

Only “grants” and “scholarships” do not have to be paid pack. Always check and double check that a money amount is truly a grant! (Obviously, you now know an Unsubsidized Loan is still a loan and must be paid back!)

Good luck.
