I have a friend whose son is a freshman at USC & his family DOES have some loans + a NMF Presidential Scholarship & a grant. Perhaps the loans are part of the EFC the family is supposed to come up with, tho they have 3 kids all in college & the mom just finished college/grad school. They have loans with ALL their kids Us, as well as merit aid at all.
I agree that USC is very generous with merit aid, IF they want the student.

thanks so much, HImom.
that really helped. i won't stress so much, even though i still wish i had more of a hand in this =)

pac10baby, if you dont mind me asking, what was your approx efc? i got interviewed for the presidential scholarship as well..

For the 2006-2007 school year, EFC was 15180. Between the Presidential scholarship and grant money, my tuition was essentially paid for. I still had to pay living expenses though - room, board, books, etc. Similar EFC this year, but I have not gotten the financial aid offer for 2007-2008 yet. Good luck on the Presidential!

what if somebody is an international student? do they still receive financial aid?

also, say you didnt apply for financial aid during your freshman year...can you apply for it in your later years?

OKAY SO NOW I HAVE THIS PACKAGE AND IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSDE. COULD THERE BE ASCHOLARSHIP THAT HAS NOT BEEN PUT IN OR OTHER GRANT.
Estimated Cal Grant A $9,708
Estimated Federal Pell Grant $3,760
Federal SEOG Grant $1,100
University Grant $21,718
Federal Perkins Loan $1,500
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan $3,500
Federal Work-Study $2,500
Total Financial Aid
$43,786

The difference between your estimated cost of attendance (shown below) and your total financial aid eligibility is $0

NOW MY ESTIMATED COST OF ATTENDANCE IS 0. I think they have not finished that yet as I saw that cost of attendance is near $ 49,000.00 this year. So I see that I have a gap here and our EFC was 0. So I really do not understans what is happeing except my daughter is going to have loans of $5,000.00 her first year and well we will too? Anyone know what is happening here?

I hope this helps a little:

here are the estimated costs as they are written in the undergraduate application (paper version, that's how I applied):

Tuition & mandatory fees = $33 892
Room & board = $10 144
Books & supplies = $750
Transportation = $580
Orientation fee = $140
Misc. expenses = $1600
Total = $47 106

My understanding is that int'l student do not recieve need based aids. So you don't get grants of federal loans/workstudy. You can get merit based aid.

You can apply for aid even if you don't apply for your first year but if you're an int'l then you wouldn't be applying anyways.
