Financial aid isn’t enough

My school cost $37k
$19k academic scholarship
$2.7k Pell Grant
$1.4k NYS TAP
Which leaves around 14k to be taken out on a loan, I also received $5,500 on Federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans.
My parents gross is $59k and have 5 people in the household. I still feel my parents don’t make enough to comfortably afford the PLUS loans to cover the rest of the tuition. If I received more grants and scholarship I would be so satisfied. Previously I was suppose to receive more Pell but my application was pulled for verification but now it’s way less which is listed above.

I will be a Freshman Fall 2018

So, you need $9k?
If you work over the summer, you should be able to make $2k.
You can appeal for more, but there are no guarantees. Is it a school that meets need?
If your parents can’t afford it, then you can’t either.

Yes, $9k they wanted my parents take the PLUS loan for that amount. Also to note the EFC is $2k

Was that $2000 FAFSA EFC before verification…or after.

After verification

Well…with a $2000 EFC, your Pell would be about $4000 for the year…not $2700.

Call and ask about that.

Yes, well to be exact the EFC is 2,200, but it was estimated 3.6k but that isn’t what the school gave me. But I still trying my best to the get the most.

Don’t get in debt if you can’t pay it back because you can’t get out through bankruptcy unless you’re 100% disabled.

Are you in NYC? Did you apply to CUNY?
Over the long range, this school is unaffordable because you are talking over 50k in debt between you and your parents, where you could get tuition at CUNY for free.

If push comes to shove, Go to CC at CUNY through ASAP, where you will get free tuition, books and metro card. Even if you go and accumulate 24 credits with a B average, you can transfer to the CUNY that you want to attend

What school is costing 37K/. What is your anticipated major? Did you apply HEOP/SEEK?

Definitely work during summer. It’s a lot easier to find good on-campus jobs on summer and pay for the rest of COA.
Also, if possible, try being a private tutor.

If, after you’ve exhausted all the possibliites, you’re still $14K short, then I think you need to reconsider your choice of schools.

I would be VERY uncomfortable with my kids taking out loans of 14 thousand dollars per year for 4 years.

Your parent’s gross is $59K. In NY, that would make you elligible for the Excelsior scholarship… basically free tuition at CUNY or SUNY.

I applied to NYIT computer science, I will most likely end up going her for a semester then and transferring to a CUNY school, but I doubt there is any way to get my tuition deposit back. I wanted to go to CUNY first but I was stuck waiting for replies, and May 1st cane too quick.

If you got accepted to a CUNY, contact them and ask if you can still accept. If they say yes, tell the other school you won’t attend. You’ll probably lose the deposit, but better to lose a few hundred dollars than be required to borrow $20k. If they won’t let you enroll, you can start at a cc or take a gap year and apply to the CUNY schools. The amount you’d have to borrow for one semester at NYIT is nearly half the federal student loan limit for 4 years. It doesn’t make any sense to take on that kind of debt when you can attend a CUNY tuition free.

You may need to take the loss on the deposit and accept your seat at CUNY. Why would you unnecessarily borrow 7k between half of your federal loan and half of the amount that your parents need to borrow to make NYIT financially.
work?

If you did not get into CUNY, you still have time to do an on the spot admission at one of the CUNY CC’s . As I said upthread, you could apply for ASAP at the CC and everything would be covered ; tuition books and a metro card. After getting 24 credits and a 3.0 you can transfer to one of the 4 year CUNY school.

It is not a matter of where you go, but what you do when you get there. I have a former student, who was smart, but did not always do her best work in HS. She went to Laguardia CC, graduated with honors, transferred to Baruch, graduated with honors and is not attending grad school at Columbia.

You might need to spend a couple of years at community college if there’s no way to come up with that money. That should close the gap.

Understandable I will probably end up studying a year at CUNY (CSI) for a year and end up transferring to either Hunter or City Tech, as they both have Computer science major I’m going for. And if I’m not mistaken any CUNY school I will be eligible for the free tuition, I would just need to apply for it?

Remember that Excelsior/TAP are only good for 4 years. After your 4 years are up, you will not receive any more funding. It does not matter whether or not you complete your degree. If you are going to have to go to the CUNY system, because it is affordable, then start there to make sure that all of your credits cleanly transfer.

Remember if you are getting Excelsior, you must successfully complete 30 credits a year . TAP/Excelsior do not pay for summer courses. However, you may be eligible for summer PELL.

Google the Excelsior scholarship.

Yes, you can apply for excelsior to pay the balance of your tuition st CUNY.
