I was awarded the Alcala $20K scholarship, and USD mentioned in a letter that it would be "coordinated...with other sources of gift assistance" if I demonstrate financial need, which I most definitely do.

The portal hasn't updated my financial aid information beyond the $20,000 scholarship, so I'd like to know if anyone has actually received grants/need-based rewards on their financial aid status yet.

Also, does anyone know if USD will be sending some sort of official financial aid letter in the mail detailing our total reward?

Hopefully some official financial aid notice will be mailed before May 1st...I'm basically stuck right now deciding between UCSD and USD. Their financial rewards will be an important factor in my final college decision.

My son received admissions and Alcala Scholarship packet in the mail on 3/12. Today, we received an email to logon to MySanDiego and check for updated financial aid package. So it may take another week or two for USD to update individual aid packages from initial admissions mail. Good luck with your decision but we’re leaning strongly towards USD.

I just received the electronic financial aid letter too, although it now only lists the grants/loans (need-based) aid I’m awarded. Before it listed my Alcala Scholarship, but it doesn’t appear to be listed there anymore…

I plan on majoring in Visual Arts with a minor in English.

I’m seriously hoping my Alcala Scholarship will be updated in my financial aid status again. Before my status was updated today, the Alcala Scholarship was the only thing listed as my reward, and now I only have the Federal grants/loans stuff listed. Very irksome. I’d like to know my financial rewards NOW. Now I have to submit all this Verification paperwork…

^yes, before today, the only thing that was listed for financial aid was the trustee scholarship, but none of the other federal grants/loans. now they are all there.

so when you’re logged in the financial aid portion of the mysandiego portal, and click on “award overview,” you don’t see the alcala scholarship listed in there at all?

how is ucsd’s visual arts major? compared to usd’s?

No, it’s not listed there at all with the awards that were added today. Was I supposed to accept/decline it perhaps? I never accepted/declined the scholarship because I thought I should wait for my full financial aid package before submitting anything final. So the scholarship was factored in your financial aid package?

I’m pretty sure the Visual Arts major is not exceptional at either school, but I’m betting UCSD has more resources while USD will have a more intimate learning environment. USD is probably stronger in regards to my major considering it’s a liberal arts type of school compared to UCSD, which is more research based. I would go to a real art school if I had the money, but it’s just too complicated for me to leave San Diego.

^wow. i doubt it has anything to do with you accepting/declining a grant/loan. its all listed there for me and i haven’t decided on what portion to accept or decline yet. that is really odd. i think it warrants a call or email to financial aid.

thanks for your insight on deciding between ucsd and usd. it was extremely helpful.

Wow, I just got an official letter in the mail explaining that the “Circle of Excellence” award listed on my financial aid status online means I got a full ride to USD.

So will my Alcala $20K scholarship need to be used in conjunction with that award?

Congratulations on your full ride We have need as well, but, unlike all the other schools to which my daughter has been accepted, USD offered nothing beyond the Alcala $20,000 scholarship. Is USD not known for offering grants? Any feedback welcome as she is visiting this week.

Our D also received the Alcala and then the full financial aid award came later. I think it was online? And it also included loans and a USD scholarship.

Hope that helps. Enjoy your visit. USD is a beautiful school and San Diego is a wonderful city. Hope you have time for a mini vacation!
