financial aid mistake?

so I got into dartmouth and I was really happy. But when I saw the financial aid package, I wasn't as much. my family makes about 45k and I thought that for ivies if your family makes under 60k you basically pay very little. I only received 10k in aid....so I would have to pay about 45k a year for tuition..... Does anyone have any recommendations?

There should be a very simple “request for reconsideration” form [I forget the precise name] in the packet/on-line. Follow up immediately. Are you sure you filled out all the docs accurately?

Does your family own a business or a farm (you stated in your chances that you worked at your parent’s retail business)? This could be what has thrown your aid package off. Many expenses that your parents write off against the business are added back in for financial aid purposes. So there is going to be a difference between what your parents are reporting as income and their how much money the business generates.

Does your family own multiple homes?

Are your parents married to each other? If not, did you also file the non-custodial profile? Have they remarried (the school will also look at your step parent’s income).

AboutTheSame is correct that you can ask for a financial review. You can fill out the paperwork documenting any extenuating circumstances that the school may have over looked regarding your financial situation.

sybbie719 yes, my parents do own a business. well, the thing is, however, that we have yet to submit the corporate tax returns for the business, so that might have been part of the reason.

and their income is solely from that business
