Financial AId OOS

trademark is a merit based scholarship (that is what the web said) funded by the money earned on the unc trademark.....all that unc gear??!!!

were your EFC numbers close to UNCs cost or alot lower? Just trying to figure out if we have a prayer for money at any point in the future!

"These scholarships are among those made possible through the university's trademark licensing program. Three-fourths of the net proceeds from sales of licensed trademark items -- including T-shirts, hats and other apparel promoting Tar Heel athletic teams -- benefit merit and need-based scholarships administered by the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid. (The remaining revenues go to the athletics department.) This year’s merit-based scholarships are valued at $2,500 each."

is that what you're refering to? as far as i can understand i think it could be need-based too, so thats prob what we all got, cuz the merit one's stated as 2500

Congrats, Ann. I still have yet to recieve a package from UNC. I called Financial Aid today and was told they're in the process of "wrapping me up" (no cellophane for those curious). Could be up to another week though till I find out. I'm completely bummed.

Of note, my friend here (egghead) told me that all scholarships you recieved are automatically subtracted from the amount of aid you recieve from UNC. What is the point in actually trying to get scholarships? I know I won't be recieving 15 grand in scholarships, so whatever I get from UNC will likely be what I'll go with and leave it at that. I'm a semi-finalist for several scholarships, but what good does it do to recieve them?

Is the trademark scholarship in FA award only for this year or is it that amount each year?

I got a 3.5k Stafford Loan, which I probably will not accept. I was really hoping to get some sort of scholarship or grant.

Oh well.

with the online notification, did any one see the laptop grant listed

Laptop grant notification comes via the postal service.

I got $3,000 per year grant.

Still pretty expensive, but a better offer than the private schools I had applied to.

how much scholarships vs workstudy/loans did ppl get. i got 18 grand vs 4grand... i was expecting alot less grants. i thought i read on myunc that the typical package is 2/3 grants vs 1/3 workstudy+loans

edit* also, has anyone in ct or mass, or any new england states gotten their fin aid package yet

I hope I find out on Monday (I'm in-state).

I got a full laptop grant :)

Just a word to the wise here. I called the UNC financial aid office and the Trademark Scholarship is "need based" and not automatically renewable merit aid, as some have stated here. In simple terms, if your household income goes up (or the number of college students in your household goes down) your need based scholarship will be decreased next year.

Our S got $9160 in Merit/Grant/Trademark and $5500 in WS/Loans. We are OOS. This is less than other schools have given, but UNC is also less expensive. In two years our D will be out of college and most of this will probably go away, with the exception of 2K in merit $.

Not many merit scholarships are automatically renewed, there are conditions and they ALWAYS state you have to maintain a gpa of x and remain in good standing with the University. Trademark like National merit scholarships are need based merit scholarships....meaning that they can fluctuate in amount depending on aid. National Merit Scholarship Finalist have to fill out the Federal Aid forms to compete for any of these type scholarships. Even most athletic scholarships are not automatically renewed but are earned every year. UNC was far more generous than my state school, in fact, it is cheaper for me to go to UNC.
