so, all you're saying I can do is get my GC to write a letter explaining my situation and hope Cornell goes for it????

I am getting my mother to write a letter and my father to sign a waiver. In addition, my counselor might write a verification letter. Will this be enough?

No, it won't be enough. If that were enough, every parent could sign a form and be done. If your father has assets or income, they will count, period. You can't just sign that away. If you chose a school that requires only the FAFSA and not the CSS, you won't have to deal with your father's income at all.

IMHO, It is not a good idea to apply ED especially since the school is not going to likely let your father off the hook. Because there is a child support agreement in place you probably won't get a non-custodial waiver from Cornell. If your father owes $150,000 in back child support (that is almost enough to pay for 4 years at cornell) your mother should take a more aggressive approach to collecting the money even if it means having the court place a lien, take away his license or even lock him up until he pays.
