How does applying for financial aid work at colleges? I applied to several early. When do I need to do this part of the application?

cornet…you need to look on the websites for EACH school to which you applied. The deadlines for each school will be clearly posted on their websites.

You might want to check ASAP. If you applied ED or EA and any of your schools use the Profile, you may have already missed the priority deadline for ED or EA applicants. Check NOW.

Thumper is right.

You need to go to each school’s website and go to their FA section and find out what their deadlines are.

Have you talked to your parents about how much they will pay each year?

Some schools require the CSS profile to be filled out, which is run by the college board. As noted above, some colleges want that filled out in November or December, using estimated data for 2010. Almost every college requires that the federal fafsa form be filled out. That is free - don’t get accentally sidetracked to for profit “fafsa” websites. That cannot be filled out until after Jan. 1 and is often required to be sent in by Feb. 1 or Feb. 15, depending upon the college.

Watch those deadlines carefully, folks. If you miss them, try to get something in quickly and then mail a revision later to each college.

The fafsa needs to be filled out even if you are only looking for federally subsidized loans.

The forms may seem incredibly long and complex, but you will probably find that most of the questions do not apply to your situation. Always put a zero in a column instead of leaving it blank.
