I got accepted at Quinnipiac University and it is by far my top choice because of the campus and what the school offers BUT, the financial aid package seems unadequete... With grants, it will cost $17,700.

I got $5000 in Stafford loans which will bring everything down to $12,700. Where will I get money to pay the rest!?!? My guardian and I cannot afford the remainder. What can I do?

You should have been offered $5,500 in Stafford loans. If you can’t afford the other $12K, you really have to rethink your choices quickly and deposit at a school you can afford. You could always do 2 years at a less expensive school and transfer. I know it’s not what you want to hear, but there is no financial aid fairy and it’s better to deal with it now and make a rational plan than get up to your neck in debt and not be able to finish your degree on time/at all. Good luck!

Chris, I don’t know your EFC, or your family finances. I can say that Quinnnipiac on average meets 71% of financial need for first year students (65% for other undergraduates).

On a personal note, and full disclosure, my son’s financial package in '06 from Quinnipiac was one of the worst FA packages that he received (out of the 8 private school acceptances). We did try to speak to their financial aid office and admissions but we did not get another cent. We had to say goodbye to this school because the financial aid package was so poor.

How were your other offers? What is your EFC? Were you expecting a full ride to college? Q is not a school that offers many full rides.

EFC=0. I wasn’t expecting a full ride. I was expecting to have the Stafford loans to pay all of it. UVM will cost me $8k with grants. They gave me up to $10k in loans if I wanted.

Much easier to earn $2500 or reduce discretionary costs between $8K and $5.5K! If UVM is a decent choice for progarm and fit too, I’d go there and save loads of money and stress down the line. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I just paid my deposit for UVM 5 minutes ago. I can’t believe I was comtemplating $18k in loans! That is crazy. Shame on me.

Great! I know that you made the right decision! 18k per year is crazy. Best of luck at UVM! Burlington is such a nice place to spend 4 years.

^ Lol. I really hate the area to be honest. Cost is the only reason I am going there. In the end I am there for an education and I will try to make the best of it. Thanks for the help northeastmom and sk8rmom. Best moms in the world.

chris, you are very sweet. Glad I could help a little. I know how tough this decision is, but in this case, your decision was really an easier one to make. You are going in with the right attitude because you are there for the education first. If you have the right atttitude, even if it takes some work, you can make it work so that you’ll be happy. I wish you all the best next fall!

Good for you! You’ll probably be so busy with stuff to do on campus that the area will not matter that much…I know so few kids that leave campus on a regular basis. Keep your grades up and, if you don’t like it there, you can always see about a transfer and scholarship after the first 2 years. Good luck!
