Financial Aid with Horrible Grades (NY State)

I have a question that I cant for the life of me figure out.

I have a friend who does absolutely horrible in college. He has been out of HS since 2009 and still needs about 20 credits for an Associates Degree. Somehow, he claims to be getting financial aid for this upcoming semester, and I know for an absolute fact that he has gotten financial aid many times in the past.

I was asking him about satisfactory academic progress and citing many sources which to my knowledge completely ruled him out of discussion from receiving FA, but he claimed he simply waits a year between applying for FA and it wipes the slate clean. I'm not talking about loans which need to be repaid either, these are grants which I am certain are not repaid.

How in the world is he pulling this off, and what loophole am I missing? The answer I got was, "take a year off and your good to apply for financial aid!"

Jalapeño…this is a case of MYOB. Why would you be discussing this with your friend? His financial situation is HIS business, not yours.

Just be honest yourself, and try to stay out of the financial affairs of others.

Have you considered that your friend might not be telling the whole truth?
