Hello, so my parents have been divorced since 2004, but my dad got remarried about 7 years ago. He and his wife just got divorced recently and it will be finalized in mid-November…right after I submit my EA applications. Their tax forms from 2015 are jointly filed. My first question is if they will look at her income, which is pretty significant, and say that I don’t need the aid even if her income won’t go towards my college at all. My second question is whether I can specify somewhere on the form that they are getting divorced so that there aren’t any red flags when my application is being reviewed. It’s a really weird scenario, but if you have any idea of what I could do, that would be great.
You can list them as separated on the form…they are separated, right? Separated and divorced are treated the same way.
On any financial aid form your dad is required to complete, he would list only HIS part of the income from 2015.
do,you live with your dad or mom? If you reside more with your mom, your dad would be your non-custodial parent. His info wouldn’t be on the FAFSA at all.
If you live more with your dad, then he would be on your FAFSA…only use his portion of the income since he is separated from his current wife.
My mom is my custodial parent, but for the CSS profile, I have to provide both parents’ info. I was told that I would have to file an appeal to the school because the numbers I submit wouldn’t match the numbers on the actual tax return document. @thumper1
Your dad should only put his income on the non-custodial parent Profile. He will indicate separated/divorced on the form.
He will likely be chosen for verification because the numbers won’t match the tax forms. He will need to provide both his, and his former wife’s income documentation for 2015…maybe w-2 forms…to verify HIS income.
On the Profile, there is also a place to,explain things. He should explain that he was separated as of whatever date. He will likely need to show proof of that as well.
