i recently got accepted in Rutgers NB but the thing is i was denied by financial aid and the reason was I’m 24 years old and independent. i make less than $20000 a year and both of my parents are disable. Is that normal? have you guys exprienced something like that ? =((
If you are independent for financial aid, your parent status doesn’t matter at all.
When are you supposed to be starting at Rutgers…because the FAFSA for the 2016-2017 just became available. How would you even know your financial aid award now?
I’m starting in 2 weeks. Are you sure? because I’m paying half of my parents income, rent… and i have another friend he’s 25 and he received around $12000.
Am I sure that you don’t include your parents on the FAFSA if you are independent for financial, aid? Yes…I’m positive. If you are 25, you do not use parent info, unless you are going to medical school.
Did you include parent information? If so…why? And when you got to the question about being born before a certain date…did you answer NO?

What does that mean? Do you pay rent to your parents because you live in their home? Do you pay half or some of the utilities because you live there?
Do your parents receive disability? If so, how much do they get each year total?
Do your parents file taxes and claim themselves?
Does your friend earn as much as you do?
What was your FAFSA EFC?
you earn about $20k per year. What should that money go towards?
sorry i meant I’m paying half of the rent and i think they receive like $400 a month and they don’t file taxes since they don’t work. and yes my friend has the exact same condition i mean he’s parents are working and his dad is a homeowner ! and my EFC is : 000000 *
If your parents are receiving disability, they’d be getting about $700 each per month.
How much do you pay for rent? Do you also pay half of the utilities and half for food? or do you just pay half rent?
Is your friend starting college as well?
A single adult earning almost $20k per year wouldn’t have an EFC of 0.
Are you sure that he got $12k in GRANTS? or did he get $12k in LOANS???
If you really have a $0 EFC…and you have not previously used college financial aid…you should,be eligible for a Pell Grant.
Are you a first time college student? Are you a transfer? How many years of college have you completed? Have you used federally funded loans in the past…and how much? Have you received the Pell Grant in the past and for how many terms?
Did you submit the 2015-2016 FAFSA to Rutgers…and if so, when? Did you include parent income. Assets, etc?
Did you list your parents as YOUR dependents? They are not. Were you selected for verification by Rutgers?
As an independent student with a $20,000 income…I don’t think your EFC would be $0.

??? Are you saying that YOUR EFC is 00000 or is your friend’s EFC 00000?
Did you claim your parents as dependents? or members of your household?
Im paying $600 a month for a rent! and yes my EFC is 0 thats what it says and they mentioned that i might be eligible for financial aid! thats why i have to call financial aid office and ask them to take a look at my account again! and i just got my associated degree and I’m pretty sure my parents are receiving about $400 a month. thank you so much for the info !
So you would be a junior. And you are sure you submitted the correct FAFSA form to Rutgers. When did you submit it?
You should get half of the Pell grant…so,about $2800…for,the second semester.
You can actually take the full years worth of direct loan…which would be $11,500 for a junior.
Who mentioned that you might be eligible for financial aid??
I just checked my SAR and there is part saying that based on the info i might be eligible for financial aid! at the the EFC is 0. they offered $4700 loan for spring but thats not enough I’m taking 15 credits so it will be over $10000 thats what i kept sending email to financial aid office to see if they can help me out a little bit.
Did you save any of your under $20k earnings?

Ok, something isn’t adding up. You’re payiing half of the rent, and you’re paying $600. That means their half is $600. Plus, there would be other living expenses…electricity, phone, food, laundry, toiletries, transportation.
How could they pay THEIR half of the rent plus their other expenses if they only had an income of $400 a month (and disability is about $700 for each disabled person).

What aid were you getting while you were at your CC? Did you submit FAFSA for the previous couple of years???
