I’m a permanent disabled vet, on the advise of my psychologist to keep my mind active I took 2 class at the local college. I was approved for financial aid grant and student loan. The school revoked the student loan because I previously had one and loan was discharged due to my disability 30 years ago . Now the are trying to revoke my financial aid unless I get a dr note stating that I’m employable and able to maintain employability. I ask them is that a requirement for all handicapped students to guarantee employability. No, just those who charged off student loans. I explain I didn’t hide my disability and since I sign the loan while disabled I know I can’t request a disability deferment. Reading the requirements for Financial aid doesn’t have a dr note for employability requirement, how do I fight this
I think they are correct. You discharged previous loans because you can’t pay them due to disability. How will you pay these loans if you are unable to work? The burden is on you.
If you hadn’t previously discharged loans, you’d be in a different position.
They have a valid point. If you’re permanently disabled, and you’ve had loans discharged because of your disability, why would they trust that you’d pay back future loans?
Wouldn’t the same thing happen again? You’d borrow money and then say that you can’t pay them back because you’re permenently disabled?
all they’re asking is for you to provide a doctor’s note saying that you’re employable and can maintain employability.
Would a doctor determine that your disability will not prevent you from being employable?
as for your Q about handicapped people and student loans. Millions of handicapped people are fully able to earn a wonderful living. Someone in a wheelchair can do almost any career…that’s just one example of many.
You’ve already demonstrated that your disability is so serious that you can’t work…so unless something has changed, and you can get a doctor to say so, why would you be a good risk for the loan.
You do understand that you should only take out loans that in GOOD FAITH you will be able to pay back.
So…in good faith, the loans that you want to take out, will you be able to be long-term employed to earn enough to pay those loans back?
Ok…I’ll bite. Do you have any veterans benefits you can use to pay for college? Or did you exhaust your GI benefits already also?
And…if you are only taking two courses…how much does this cost? Your loans and grants would be prorated for this amount of coursework.
Are you a matriculated student? Are you enrolled in a degree seeking program?

This is what the school is asking you to do.
