Financial aid

Do they have to add loans to figure out your need based aid because i don’t want it this year … I know it’s cost of attendance - need based aid

The school will put loans in the FA package (if it has that policy to include loans), but you don’t need to accept them. Your other grants and scholarships probably won’t change and you’d have to come up with that money some other way.

If you don’t get the loans this year, how will you cover costs?

This for next year if I could afford to go to sam Houston cost of attendance is at sam Houston is 24,806 but they added extra cost that I don’t need like parking enrollment fee so it’s like 20,000-21000 and this year at a community college my efc was 00000 I heard they calculate COA - EFC = financial need then with the non-need based it’s COA-how much financial aid you were given=Eligibility for non-need based aid … if my cost of attendance is 24,806 and they minus the Pell Grant from that = 18711 my parents could pay the rest but with the loans won’t it make me and my parents have to pay more ? Because of them subtracting more money from the COA?

The Pell Grant now is 6,095

No, they will not increase your grants because you choose not to take the loans. Most schools include the loans in the FA package in order to help you meet the cost. COA - Pell grant - any other scholarship or grants = your need. The school may then help you meet that need by giving you a need based grant or a loan. In your example, $25k - $6k (Pell) is $19k. You need $19k. Sam Houston is likely to include loans to get you to $19k.

Thank you !!! ?

How can your 0 EFC parents pay $18k per year for your college? Where would they get the money?

Right…to get an automatic EFC, I believe your income has to be less than $20,000 a year.

I’m confused … how much will sam houston give me for financial aid ?? My friend parent income is higher than my dads she said she didn’t have to pay a dime financial aid paid for everything and her cost at sam is 8500 a semester …

I used my dad income for financial aid he has low income my mom has high income there not together

Do you live with your dad?

Does your mom pay child support to your dad?

I think what you mean by “free ride” is need based aid. A free ride really has to do with merit scholarships.

Yes I know because fasfa emailed me and said it’s based of your need based aid and non need they have cost of attendance - anything financial aid give you = your need . They said the school will try to make it as close as possible for me to meet my need for shsu . No there’s no child support involved

Sam Houston said I could put them on my FAFSA when it opened October first to see how much I’ll get

Run the net price calculator on Sam Houston website. You might get a TX state grant as well as Pell Grant. Are you a TX resident?

You can decide later whether you need the loans or not, after you get your financial aid award letter.

Yes I’m a Texas resident

You might want to put other schools on the application list and FAFSA that might be affordable.

If you have high stats, UT Dallas or Texas Tech might give you scholarships to make it affordable.

Texas a&m is way higher than sam Houston lol but I will put other schools on my financial aid just in case Ik sam Houston give transfer scholarships as well

This doesn’t make sense. Your mom’s income is high and she can afford the $18k per year for college…BUT, your dad is very low income and your mom doesn’t provide for your support???

Are you living with your dad?

Well she has good income my mom can pay for my dorm each semester that’s about it I live with my dad she doesn’t make that much to just put down 18k…
