Yes, I checked under application status. I checked there when people said they were recieving their fin aid package and and sure enough there was a new fin aid award link. When I open it, it is dated 12/15/06 and says awards will be available in March.

pharmmom, I just happened to log onto MyNEU this morning and under the self-service tab, Financial Aid, there was some new information I had never seen. Instead of 3 tabs, there were 5. One of the new tabs was called "awards". In there I found that D had been awarded an "Engineering Legacy Scholarship" iin addition to the Presidential she had received when accepted EA. It also listed Stafford unsubsidized loans in the amount of $3500 as our financial aid, which is all I expected for need based. I checked the application status site again, and nothing has changed there.

Also, according to a post on the NEU message board from someone in admissions all EA financial aid and scholarships have now been awarded.

Check it out.

My application status still hasn't changed but now when I log onto myneu, they have a new list of required documents from me about accepting my financial aid award. However, I still have only 3 tabs, and they don't show my award..

Thanks RatedPG, myneu still has just 3 tabs in Financial Aid and nothing there has changed. I'll just call tomorrow morning.

We STILL haven't received an email or snail mail regarding fin. aid, but my d's fa package was listed when I logged in under app. status rather than the admitted students' portal. Check it out EA students if you haven't rec'd word yet!

So we finally see a financial aid letter in the application status check dated March 21st. It recaps everything and includes estimated costs for next year. For anyone else who received these, does the last line on the letter say 'we are glad you have chosen Northeastern as your university..... or something to that effect'? Just curious, because we haven't chosen anything. :-)

Yes PG, my financial aid letter does say the same thing at the end. It's definitely just a standard opening page letter where they change the name just to save them some time. I'm guessing it doesn't mean anything because I haven't decided yet.

wow didn't get anything close to what i was expecting...guess i'm not going to northeastern

i think some fin aid awards will be given out later because maybe they got your papaers filed or sent in later? mines already up but i know my parents sent the stuff in in like january.

does anyone know what the average financial aid package is for northeastern?

Average percent of need met: 64%

Average financial aid package: $17,553

Average need-based loan: $3,715

Average need-based scholarship or grant award: $13,660

Average non-need based aid: $12,281

* Scholarships / grants: 52%
* Loans / jobs: 48%

according to collegeboard

Can you somehow fin out how much aid you're getting online, at the MyNEU portal or something?

^ they included my tentative financial aid package with my acceptance letter.
only 64% need met.. i had no idea NU was so stingy with their money.

I was wondering about my D's financial aid package too. She got a 12K merit scholarship and $6K in grants, and about $5K loans/work study. While I feel that the scholarship is generous, I think they could have provided more grant money, as we have an EFC of only $5K, no assets, and older (50's and 60's). There is a 20K gap that there is no way we can meet - we don't qualify for and couldn't afford a loan that large. Is it worth it to appeal, as Northeastern is really her top choice? She got bad FA from UConn and Penn State, but got good aid from University of New Hampshire. Any advice?

precollegemom, It never hurts to ask for a review. I do think that the gap is too great to get hopeful. Even if another 3-5,000 were given in the form of grants, you would still have at least a 10,000 gap. My son got a nice merit scholarship last year, but he did not receive any additional grants. We never contacted the FA office to inquire about anything else. Are you instate for UNH? Could she be happy at UNH?

Clearly, Northeastern is using their money to attract kids with certain stats, and not for financial aid. Their choice I guess. They are an up and coming school, and attracting a higher performing student must be their goal.

Thanks, Northeastmom. I may ask for a review. D is out of state for UNH, received Presidential scholarship, Honors program invitee. She visited and liked it, but Northeastern is still her number one choice.

I can understand that, precollegemom. NEU, has a good reputation currently, it is in Boston, Coop program, so what more could one ask for! I have heard that UNH is a very nice school too. If NEU is just not affordable, then she could get a good education at UNH. It is a good thing that she likes it. It is for this reason that I told my son not apply to a school where he would not be happy. Congrats on to your D on the honor's program and scholarship at UNH!

I had a friend ask for her merit scholarship to be reviewed (was accepted to honors, received $5k/year) and she brought up that some of her friends who were accepted with lower GPAs and SATs and not accepted to the honors program received merit aid in excess of 5 figures a year. They told her that those weren't the only factors being considered and that they wouldn't bump up her scholarship. It's always risky to bring up other people's aid into the equation, but as one of the people who was less qualified than her yet got more than double in merit aid, she definitely deserved more than what she got. On a side note, she was accepted RD to the Steinhardt School in NYU and received more merit money (she wouldn't have qualified for need-based aid at either school, or most schools for that matter) from them than she did from NEU which is very odd considering the stingy rep NYU has with aid.
