Financial Aid

For most of us, aid is the most decisive factor of attending a college. Many people say that admission decision also depends upon the amount of aid you ask for.

So, what are the chances of undergrad and international students getting aid at Bowdoin?

Bowdoin is need blind in admissions and promises to cover 100% of matriculating students' demonstrated need with grants.

It harder to get aid if your an international student, though, because allot of the aid comes from the fed govt which only covers US students.

Does that mean asking for more aid will reduce my chances for getting into Bowdoin? I mean, Bowdoin is like on the top of my list and I wouldn't want anything to reduce my chances there!

the question of aid at bowdoin is considered independently from that of admissions. it will not affect their decision to admit or deny you in the least.

Umm from what I gather that is only true if you are a US citizen. Bowdoin is not need-blind to international students, however asking for aid wouldn't kill your chances. I know some internationals with aid and some without. It also depends on if you are a US citizen that has been living internationally then the above is true, if you have been schooling in the US then I'm not sure but I know that if your citizenship is from outside the US then it is harder but not impossible.

I had to make a similar decision last year and Georgetown puts it this way, you don't pay taxes so it's hard to give you federal money. However Bowdoin has such a large endowment that they can take care of you, it kinda also depends on how strong an applicant you are and if you can really pay for it but would rather not. Even if it isn't really easy but it won't be crazy hard. There's also people who get admitted without any aid even though they apply so you just need to think over it. Isn't it kinda late to be deciding this though?

This is something you may not want to decide with opinions so I would advise you to email the international admissions officer for your region which can be found at
Connect (Bowdoin Admissions) or contact Elmer as he is usually helpful.

There is also a podcast page which you can link from Bowdoin's homepage referring to the myths of financial aid but I'm not sure if it has any information relating to international students but you might as well try it.
