Financial Aid

Alright heres my situation hopefully you can give me some insight:

I am going to be applying to schools for the Fall of 2010, and I was wondering how the finanicial aid worked.

My parents are comfortable, my dad makes about 100k a year and my Mom and my step dad make about 150 together.

I am not currently living with either of them, as i have an apartment with my friend with the lease in my name, and his dad pays the entire rent.

I would like to claim independent on my applications so that schools will help me out more with FA, but i dont know how this works, like what does it take to not have to put your parents information on it and only your own.

RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD BE GREAT! THanks

age? how much do you make? there a couple of key factors…that you are missing in this post… Go to your schools finanical aid office. They will give you all the 411.

You have to be 23 to be an independant, either in the military, or married.

i only make like 10-15k a year…and im only 20, so im screwed huh lol

Your parents make bank…they should be able to assist you.

But yeah there going to go by your parents tax info from fasfa so pick who ever makes the least. No way around it or I’m sure everyone would claim independent.

well my mom and step dad have to give half his money to his ex wife, plus both my parents are splitting 30,000 a year for my sisters nursing school so of course im stuck with paying for it myself.

So im allowed to only list one of my parents and not both?

you are only allowed to list one set of parents, your mom/step-dad or dad/step-mom if applicable. i’m in the same boat as you, dad/step-mom makes $100,000+ a year yet I still have to pay for school, I make about $9,000 a year, and need as much financial aid as possible which is nothing when you submit such information so I’m stuck with having to get student loans.

You are supposed to technically list the parents you live with most of the year, that is what you are legally obligated to list, not the parental set that makes the least.

Your EFC will be divided with your sisters though, but it will still be pretty high given the income.

Also if you are a veteran or have a child of your own you can be independant.

Vegas is pretty close to all parts of california- you can just elope with a good friend .

hahaha !

Agreed. Elope with a good friend and all of your problems will be solved. hahaha. I can only laugh because I have been 22 before with no help from the quasi-wealthy parents.

like everyone else said, you’re stuck… and to my knowledge, independent status = 24 years old, two deceased parents, have a child, or orphan… that’s it.

and yes, you can list only one of your parents, if they’re divorced.
