Does NEU consider the cost of tuition and room and board when creating their financial packages? In other words if a student was given grant money or a scholarship and then decides to move off campus (middler year) would the grant money be rescinded?

It’s considered as living expensives, not necessarily room and board. So they figure you’ll spend X amount of money on living (housing, food, etc) in one semester in Boston, regardless of where you spend it (on-campus or off). So I’m nearly certain that means most if not all financial aid will be identical regardless of where you live. I know for a fact that scholarships, like Dean’s, don’t change.

I know that technically, some things can change when you move off-campus. I have several different sources where my parents pull my education funds from. Since those funds have to be marked for education only, moving off campus means that your rent isn’t part of that. So say you always took 10k a year tax-free from a retirement account (or whatever kind of account, I don’t know) to pay to Northeastern for on-campus housing. Technically you aren’t supposed to do that, but since it goes towards the school, no one would ever know or care. But when you move off-campus, that 10k won’t be paid to the school anymore so you’d have to find a new source that doesn’t require “education” expenses. Hope that makes sense. It’s something my parents complained a lot about.

But if there is a special need-based grant you received, you might as well call the school just to check. I don’t think anything will change, but there’s no harm in double-checking with a financial aid counselor.
