sunnybaNANA: What is your EFC?

Am i the only who is terrified to take out loans?! I just have a repeat of horror stories in my head of people who cant pay those loans and ugh! that’ll be completely on me. i basically got the same offer as the op, and i really dont wanna work while im in college, at least, not this first year because i want to be able to find out how college life is first before i decide to take a job. ive been looking for and completing scholarships hoping that ill be able to get extra money so that i can get rid of those terrible loans!

I don’t think you should be too worried about taking out loans (subsidized govt loans). I have friends at private colleges who have the pleasure of waiting for that $250,000 bill when they graduate, but they aren’t really worried.
I have a lot of friends who work at UCSC’s dining halls and they have no issues with it interfering in their college life. It’s an easy way to get work study money and their schedules are created specifically for them. They just work 4 hours, 2-3x a week, and they are still able to hang out with friends, do well in their studies, go to parties, participate in clubs/sports, and basically get the whole college experience.

is 30k for ucsc overestimated or do most students pay less than that?

If UCSC has posted an estimate, it’s overestimated (which it’s supposed to be). Although I don’t know the exact rates or estimations for 2010-2011 year, I can easily look at this year and last year to tell you it’s pretty off. I spent $300 on my books last year and sold back most of them, so I basically spent $100 on my books. UCSC listed book and supply costs to be $1392 for the whole year. Also the transportation field proves to be a bit of a mark up.

If you want to see how much you will pay, basically take your tuition fees (those are exact values) and then estimate your books, personal expenses, and transportation. I believe I spent around 22k last year all together, but tuition rates keep increasing every year.

but doesnt the blue and gold plan cover all tuition fees for familes who have a 70,000 income or lower

I contacted the UC’s earlier today about the blue and gold plan and this is what they said: “The Blue and Gold program just ensures that you will have enough grant aid to have the fee portion covered. You are already receiving more than that amount in grant aid.”
Although I am still recieving about 8,000 in loans, my fee portion is covered so I do not qualify for the b&g plan…

Anyone know when the deadline is to accept awards? and can you accept some awards now and the rest later?

deadline to accept awards is in june, i think its the 15th not sure. Hey thorshammer if ur fees are covered doesnt that mean that u are qualified for the B&G plan since u already received it? Oh year deadline to sir is not until 2morrow at 11:59 pm
