In addition to blossom’s good info, each state has different rules for a student who wants to pursue emancipation, so check into that.
For example, in Illinois the student must be 16 or 17, and meet these two criteria:
- You must prove that you can manage your own affairs; and
- You must show that you already have lived completely or partially independently from your parents.
What that means is that a minor who wants to be emancipated needs a plan for how they will live and support themselves (and have been doing it at least to some degree), and access to stable housing.
