Hi all,
I'm back on to CC and this time seeking advice on any grants, scholarship programs for Graduate students. I've searched google etc., but with little luck of any opportunities applicable to my situation. I've already scored an assistantship and scholarship that will help curb costs but still need help!

Here's a bit about me:
M.Ed. Higher Educational Counseling student (going into Year 1)
1st generation college student
American with a Latin American background

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

If you have an assistantship and scholarship, that already puts you way ahead.

There are very few, perhaps bordering on no, private scholarships for graduate studies.

How much is your gap and will a small Stafford loan fill it? Because that’s probably your most likely option.

Some students save money by working in the dorms as an RA which often gets them free room & board.

At most colleges, RAs are undergrad students…but there can be residence life jobs within the dorms (resident director level) for grad students…that usually also provide free lodging as part of the compensation.

The Stafford loan amount for grad students is pretty high…how much do you need to fill in your gap?

My gap for the next year as a USC Grad student will be 12k for the Fall/Spring semester. I will be requesting that thru the Stafford Subsidized and a bit Unsubsidized to cover the rest!

I know it’s not a lot and I’m still putting up money out of pocket all year but I really, REALLY want to minimize my loans. (As do other students, I’m sure.) Thanks for the leads everyone, I missed the deadline for the RA-ship this year but I’m hoping to apply and receive it next year. :)

D1 was told by the FA advisor at her med school that it’s looks almost certain that the subsidized Stafford loan programs for ALL professional and graduate programs will be terminated at the end of the current academic year (2011-12).

I’m not worried about the 2nd year because staff at USC get tuition paid for after 8 mos of working there if working full time and taking courses concurrently.
